A route planner for UK public transport
Article by: Darren Griffin Date: 6 Feb 2014
Whilst this isn't a GPS app, it is a navigation app and one with a novel, and for many, very useful twist.
UK Transport is an iOS app that allows you to plan journeys using buses, coaches, trains, tubes, trams and ferries. Just enter your start and end locations and the app does all the hard work.
The resulting itinerary shows you which service each particular leg of a journey is using, shows the walking time between a service change, provides a handy map and even tells you what Bus number you need to be looking for.
UK Transport is a well thought out app that could be a boon to anyone who relies on public transport, and especially useful to tourists. Available in the AppStore for £5.99.

£5.99?
I find UK Transport Search to do rather a good job, and it links to TransportDirect.gov website.
And. Its free!

Isn't it marvellous? This comes out when the government is talking about doing away with my pensioner's free bus pass!

I use Moovit on my Android phone, free at the moment. Developed by an Israeli company and may well get taken over by Google or similar.
Can use it for trains, ferry, tram, bus, tube.
Probably an apple app as well.

Yes, Moovit is available from the App Store for the iPhone but not the iPad.

Save your money: You can already get this facility from the Transport Direct website, and which is already paid for through out taxes. For once, a USEFUL bit of kit off the gubbmint

Due to the Tube strike I searched for apps that would help with my daily commute and found, Journey Pro - London UK. This was ideal as it's a route planner that you can select the types of public transport to use, during the Tube strike deselecting tubes provided some interesting alternatives.
Another app that I've been using for a number of years is Train Times, not only does it provide times but also current train progress, any delays and the platform numbers.
Regarding the 'UK Transport' app my feeling is that £5.99 is rather high, I'm an iOS developer and can appreciate that these applications do take time to develop and test but the pricing should be closer to £1.99.

Agreed, I think £5.99 is a bit steep!
For buses only, I have been using https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/uk-bus-checker-live-bus-times/id537981387?mt=8
Seems to do the job nicely, let's you zoom in on a location and find the nearest bus stop.
Then shows what buses stop there and when the next one is due, you can also show the route of the bus.
Means I can find a pub, find which bus I need and find which stop I need to go to!
Genius!
