Over 5000 motorists were caught speeding by Suffolk’s A12 average speed cameras in the first five months of this year. They have only been in operation since October last year.

It's likely that many think these point-to-point cameras aren't actually turned on.

Also it's thought that non compliance can be blamed on driver's lack of concentration or ignorance as to how they actually work.

A freedom of information request from Suffolk police revealed the following offence figures:

January 2016: 1,236
February: 1,051
March: 779
April: 1,053
May: 964

The top speed recorded was 111mph.

Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore, commented: "I find it absolutely staggering that despite all the publicity and numerous warning signs, drivers cannot keep to the speed limit. Average speed cameras are used where there is a history of collisions. That should tell us something.

He added "Speed limits are there for a reason. Speed is one of the fatal four causes of serious injury or death on our roads and these thoughtless drivers really do need to wake up to the fact that they are not just risking their own lives, but the lives of fellow road users."

Not at all surprised and I agree with his comments. Usually plenty of notice and yet drivers speed on putting themselves and more importantly others at risk.

So why is so much resource poured into enforcing speed limits and so little spent on the other 3?!

And what are the other three that don't warrant a mention?
What's the word 'fatal' doing in there anyway. It makes no sense at all. Fatal indicates death, so how can 'fatal causes' cause serious injury.Rolling Eyes
Having said that, I suppose death is a fairly serious injury. Shocked

Well effort is also put into the other 3 but not so easy to spot them with cameras ... Wink

Others are mobile phones, seat belts and drink driving ...

How do seat belts cause serious injuries or death.

But if you don't crash they cannot harm you which means something else was the cause of the accident & not wearing the seat belt was a secondary action?
