South East Wales Transport Commission has recommended to the Welsh Government that average speed cameras are introduced on the M4 around Newport.

The point-to-point devices would monitor a 50MPH limit eight mile area between junction 24 (Coldra) and junction 28 (Tredegar Park) at a cost of between one and two million pounds.

A variable speed limit of 30 to 70mph is currently in place with 3,000 to 4,000 vehicles per hour using the stretch.

Lord Terence Burns, chair of the commission, said: "If the road is to function effectively, it needs to get people down to a speed where the traffic has a chance of flowing and the people who are not leaving (at an exit) have better lane discipline."

I wonder just how SPECS will improve lane discipline?

Makes it worse for some.

Selfish drivers doing their speedo 49 - 50 outside lane, real speed 46 ish and seemingly refusing to get out of the way of those of us wanting to do 50mph Satnav speed, 53 on my speedo.

But those volvos etc hogging Kremmen's outside lane, they are immune to flashers.
They are unaware or don't care, or deliberately hogging to enforce their own interpretation of the speed limit.

Through dual carriageway motorway roadworks, you often find them arranged side-by-side at 47 true mph for miles on end. Self-importantly.

Dales.

Had one yesterday. Outside lane Merc taxi.

Varying from speedo 45 to 50 alongside a truck, up down up down, not quite giving enough room to undertake. Then the idiot went from outside lane to M25 sliproad cutting up 4 lanes.

I don't like flashing them because it can trigger road rage for the intellectually challenged.

Yes, there's no point in flashing at a numbskull.

You might consider sending in your dashcam footage to HQ.

These people are indeed prima facie guilty of "driving without consideration for other road users".

They are deliberate lane-hoggers and obstructionists, and the authorities really should give them advice, if the evidence is submitted to them.

Dales.
