Gloucestershire Police have released details of the trial of a new long-range speed camera. It was tested at 35 sites on the A417 during November 2018.

It can be used to catch drivers as far as to one kilometre away.

Nicknamed 'The Long Ranger', it can record a number of offences including tailgating, mobile phone use whilst driving and not wearing a seatbelt.

The trial resulted in 52 warnings being issued to drivers, 12 vehicles being impounded and one weapons seizure. There was also one drunk driver caught and another under the influence of drugs.

There was a total of 1,325 offences - 1,293 for speeding, with the highest speed being 126mph.

According to an RAC poll, 59 per cent of over 2,000 drivers asked were in favour of the device with 28 per cent against.

A spokesman for the RAC said: "Drivers are used to speeding being enforced by a variety of means and are frustrated a similar focus is not employed to catch those they regularly seen committing other motoring offences."

He added: "With dramatically fewer police officers on patrol these days, enforcement of multiple motoring offences via long-range camera could be seen as a more efficient use of police time."

Especially if it is manned by 'Safety Partnership' Personnel.
