This is just me testing the setup of my Mac Safari browser.

Background

For the last month or so, I've noticed that when I browse this forum on my Mac (Safari browser) there were certain characters that were substituted with a question mark in a square. I also had it reported to me that when I used gratin characters, those appeared as junk for other people.

When I used Chrome instead of Safari as my browser I could post normally and read characters normally.

Actions

I first tried Font Book (Mac font utility) and looked for problems. None were found so I removed all none standard fonts of which there was only a few but that still didn't fix the proplem.

I then checked Safari preferences | Advanced : Default Encoding which was set to Unicode (UTF-8). I changed the Default Encoding to Western (ISO Latin 1)

Testing

Written via Safari: àéüç (looks OK in Chrome)
Written via Chrome: àéüç (looks OK in Safari)

Results

Changing my Safari browser to Western (ISO Latin 1) seems to have done the trick because now when I write a special character (e.g. one with an accent) using Safari, it looks OK in both Safari and Chrome. and when I write a special character (e.g. one with an accent) using Chrome, it looks OK in both Chrome and Safari.

I just hope that this is true for what I see in other people's posts and vice versa.

Regards,
