Basecamp store maps on PC?

Playing with Basecamp. When my Garmin device is plugged into the PC I can see the maps on the device and select the one I want to use in Basecamp. Basecamp says that the map is installed on the PC and asks if I want to use the one installed on the PC. This works ok until I disconnect the Garmin device, with the Garmin device disconnected I cannot select the map in Basecamp. If the map is installed on the PC why do I need the device connected to see it? Is this how it works or am I missing something?

In Garmin Express, bottom of home page, where does it say the PC maps are saved to, and, are they there ?

It said they were installed to C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps but that folder was empty. Tried the install again and can see them in Basecamp now. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

I don't know whether Garmin have fixed it but keep an eye on that folder.

I've only got a small SSD as my C:\ and I wondered why it was filling up. Turned out to be the last 3 map updates and umpteen firmware updates which at multi Gb soon filled it.

I've now pointed my maps to my multi Tb D: drive.

C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps is 4.73Gb after one map update.
C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Coreservice is 10.2Gb after one set of firmware updates.
Is it safe to delete this stuff?

CoreService yes, Maps no as that's the map that BaseCamp uses.

I've just removed a load of stuff from \Coreservice\

Even though my Basecamp maps go to my D:\ drive there was still 8Gb on my C:\

Deleted the last 6 firmware updates in there as well as Mb's of related stuff in the temp folder.
