Nonsense. All that it shows is that, for a very specific and limited case (unsupervised, young children crossing a road) that their perception is sufficiently immature that they cannot recognise the inherent dangers. The causal factors in these specific collisions could just as easily be determined to be "allowing unsupervised young children to participate in risky endeavours" as anything to do with the speed of the vehicles.

What about the body of collisions as a whole, rather than choosing one extremely narrow use case which supports your (flawed) reasoning?

Just because you don't like something doesn't make it nonsense.
It's still a fact, just a fact YOU choose to ignore.

Please re-read my post and your question has already been answered.
The irony of your phrase "your (flawed) reasoning", is delicious.

How can speed itself kill? Come on brains, answer that!

Speed or inertia cannot kill, unless you attempted to go from 0 to 186,000 mps (yes! that miles per second) in a second in which case you'd be flattened by the inertia.

It's the impact with a solid object that kills, because it damages the brain/organs etc that hit the inside of the skull or the crush injuries, it's NOT the speed, but the impact.

Look at any fly/insect or bird and I see a lot of all of them when I drive at up to 100 mph, the simply blow apart when they hit the windscreen, just like a human does when I hit one with a high speed train.

Do you do that often? I would imagine that once is one too many and pretty traumatic for all concerned. Sad

Done twice now.

1st one had fallen (drunk) into the track, removed part of his head, leg & arm.

2nd I rather not discuss, but it was just under 100 mph and not a lot left.

Not nice is it, I sympathise.

I got a call to a jumper once, or rather someone who simply stood on the track as the train hit him. Three large parts and various other bits to collect by someone (thankfully not me, I just pronounced him dead).

Largest part of the job was helping the train driver and others in shock after the incident.

Australian research: the risk of speeding in comparison to drink driving risks
The Australian researchers Kloeden, McLean and colleagues performed a case control study to compare the risk of speeding and the risk of drink driving. In urban areas with a speed limit of 60kmh, the researchers determined the speed of accident involved cars preceding the accident as well as the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of the accident involved drivers. Similarly, they determined the speed and BAC of cars/drivers not involved in accidents, but driving in the same direction, same day of the week, same hour of the day, etc. They also controlled for other potentially confounding variables, such as age and gender. The risk of sober, non-speeding drivers was the basic risk, set at 1. The risk of speeders and drink drivers was determined relative to this basic risk. They found:

Column 1 Speed kmh / mph
Column 2 Relative risk of speeding
Column 3 Blood Alcohol concentration (g/dl)
Column 4 Relative risk of Drink driving

1 2 3 4
60/37 1.0 0.00 1.0
65/40 2.0 0.05 1.8
70/43 4.2 0.08 3.2
75/47 10.6 0.12 7.1
80/50 31.8 0.21 30.5

This study indicates that exceeding the speed limit of 60kmh by 5kmh is comparable to the risk of a BAC of 0.05. The risk of exceeding the 60kmh speed limit by 10kmh is higher than driving with a BAC of 0.08.

Dear Chalk and Cheese,

I do wish you'd stop posting. I (having made a very early, very flippant comment) am unfortunately being notified of every comment posted. I don't understand what any of you are talking about. (PLEASE DON'T EXPLAIN).

If you were to click on the link which says "stop watching this topic", which is at the bottom of every page, then you would no longer receive email notifications when those people who do understand the topic choose to discuss it.

But when you click on 'Forums ~ New Posts', It comes up, and someone else might have posted something that Dennis might be interested in.
I don't bother with email alerts, they clutter up your inbox like it was going out of fashion. Just use the 'New Posts' link. Very Happy

What rule number is it for not posting in "Look at me, Look at me, Look at me" colours?

By the way, I WANT to watch this topic, which is about a week long speeding purge, NOT about whatever it was that Chalk and Blue Cheese were rabitting about.

How very bizarre that a "Moderator" who has 13,000+ posts (but apparently not even the most basic understanding of how forum notifications work) is more interested in posting ad hominem attacks and calling other users by childish names than in discussing the scientific evidential basis behind the data quoted in the news item under discussion!

(I'd also be interested in a link to the avatar rules, especially given that the forum gallery from which you can choose standard avatars includes a number of animated ones...)

@philip,

I think Dennis is a decent and honest moderator and commentator.

I also think that Amoeba is a crank and a troll, and I would have expected you to agree, given your earlier points.

Dales.
