I have recently upgraded from the old Android app to the latest TT Go on my Galaxy S4 - and have a map query. The installation of Go required a 5gb new Western Europe map download.

But now I have two maps choking up my external card storage - and I don't know which is the old one to delete. (I have already uninstalled the actual 'Western Europe' app.)

Confusingly, both maps are called Western_Europe. One is in:
extSdCard/Android/data/com.tomtom.gplay.navapp/files/data/maps/
The other is simply in:
extSdCard/Western_Europe and is just over 2gb in size.

My guess is the latter - but I'd not like to bin that and find I've got to do another 5gb download!

As for the new app: a bit of a learning curve. I guess familiar to GO standalone device users, but to me a completely new way of doing things - like no longer having 'drive via' option, or 'avoid part of route'. But there are ways (once you've found them) round that - and you can add multi stop points and save routes (once called itineries).

The maps themselves look different - not sure I like the blocky 3d view (but you can easily zoom in and out) but the 2d one is much, much better, more detail and easy to zoom and pan around.

For 94p upgrade (for existing users) that gives you three years traffic and speed cameras, I think it is worth going for. Anyway, after October the old app will no longer be supported.

Can you not see the file date to sort them out?

Thanks for that. Eventually found going to file properties their dates - and deleted the one I suspected.

One other thing I like about new app is that the Change View icon is a mini compass - showing direction of travel.

It's a vast improvement on the old TomTom app but it still needs work & crashes with monotonous regularity! Sad

Maybe that's a device thing. On my Galaxy S4 it's not crashed once over four days continuous use (I'm touring/wandering in my campa). In fact - unlike the old app - it's stayed steady even when I'm using other apps.

Another - thankfully - benefit is that the GooglePlay app will automatically update. The old one never did.

PostPosted: Tue Nov 10, 2015 11:31 am    Post subject: Personal POIs (Android) Reply with quote

POIs are a real weak aspect of Go on Android. Take, for example, looking for any old supermarket - you can't, unless you go by name (ie Tesco, etc). A supermarket search will bring up every known business under the sun. Cobblers.

Anyway, adding your own POIs is equally as confusing. I've added the magnificent Archies campsites POIs for Europe. Where to put them I got from a hint on the TomTom forum somewhere:
/......... /Android/data/com.tomtom.gplay.navapp/files/files/personal/pois/
Maybe the wrong folder?

Well, to find them in this scenario, do NOT try a POI search. No, they are under My Places.

And like any POI search on Android Go, My Places search has to be directed to: near me, along route, near destination. And even Destination if it's just a village or town is arduous - ie getting to a town centre requires going through more hoops/menus.

Finally you can, after pressing the right symbol, see the POI icons on the map for the specified area (near me, destination, etc) - but not for the entire map.

In the end, I resort to Google.

Generally I prefer the navigation experience of TomTom over Google, Sygic and so on, but in this mobile, data-driven, artificial intelligence era, I think TomTom is stuck in the mud. (Why, for example, cannot it learn my driving speeds/routes/habits and react accordingly?)
