Static speed cameras across the Bristol area are being reactivated, ahead of the April date that was announced last month.

The first one is being switched back on today on the A4 in Saltford and 28 cameras are set to follow over the coming months.

Avon and Somerset Police's Road Safety Superintendent Richard Corrigan said: "Our message is loud and clear – drivers should assume that all roadside fixed cameras are now operational and drive accordingly. Drivers who choose to exceed the speed limit can expect to be caught and prosecuted if they exceed the legal speed limit."

Bristol's fixed speed cameras were switched off following the government's decision to end Safety Camera Partnership funding back in 2011.

Corrigan believes that the cameras can be operated in a cost-neutral way. The revenue raised from fines will be used to fund their maintenance and enforcement.

For anyone interested further, today's local ITV news reported this and their website lists the cameras involved.

I've just spent a happy early evening checking the list and our members can be reassured that every last one of them is on our database - as live cameras - we never removed them as they are big yellow boxes and could have been switched on again at no notice. A couple of the listed cameras are actually Redlight cameras.

The list does not include quite a few more which we have, but I am not inclined to suggest removal of any not included in their list.

Local elected mayor (George Ferguson of the red trousers) is a keen guy for speed limits, supporting 20mph for Bristol and the reactivating of the local cameras.

He's on tonight's news for speeding, 35 in a 30 zone. Smile He freely admitted it, said it was always wrong and it was momentary inattention. Pity they don't have a phone-in, I could have offered my usual comments on momentary, inadvertent, etc, etc.

And that Saltford camera must be the most sneaky in the Avon area.

You have to be doing 20MPH at top of the hill and in 2nd gear and you still go over 30Mph when you get to the camera without touching the throttle at all.

And believe it or not, in an earlier incarnation I paid for that camera to be put there! It became the highest earner in the County of Avon.
