Hi all,

I've recently moved from a PDA running Tomtom 6 to a Nuvi 3597, attracted by the bluetooth, and voice activated thing. Both of these are really good, but I have to say I'm less impressed by the route finding etc - maybe I'll get used to it.

The question is: I've managed to download the speed camera alerts using the POI Loader, but to get Liz's voice, do I use MP3 or WAV files?

Incidentally I'm talking about the old unsupported version. I can't see where to download the new ones.

Any help appreciated. thanks

Ricko.

HI,
You need wav files. Putting voices onto the garmin is not straight forward. You also need a copy of sox.exe which can be found on this forum somewhere. This file you need to put in the same directory as your POI Loader program, from Garmin.

I would recommend you use Kremmins 'CSV Converter program' to load & manage your pgpsw speed cams on your device. Makes updating simpler & also remove duplicates.

More info on this you will find in the CSV converter thread.

Thanks for the steer Wibbley.

It sounds like it might be outside of my IT capabilities but I'll have a look.

To get up & running, download the pgpsw cam files & voice pack in wav format and unzip it to a folder on your computer.

To load any poi onto your garmin sat-nav you need to download & install 'POI Loader' from garmin.

(ok it is not strictly true, there are other ways to load POIs but we will keep it simple for now)

In the same folder that POI loader is in ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\POI Loader) you also need to put the file called sox.exe

The link below will take you to a page to download sox.exe. follow the link in the 'Instructions' box, not the green 'Download' button at the bottom of the page.
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/speed-camera-alerts-garmin.php

You can now run 'POI Loader', which should find your sat-nav & then direct it to the folder with the speed cams & voice pack.

Right, the above should get you going & now you should also be able to download & transfer other POI lists to your sat-nav.

Moving onto the future, it is well worth reading up about Kremmin's POI converter, there is a whole thread on here about it & plenty of people who will guide you through getting it up and running. This program is a little tricky to set up, but once done makes it far easier to download, unzip & install the PGPSW cam files. It also sorts out duplicates on motorways, where a cam on each carriageway would otherwise generate two warnings, you can also tweak how early/late the cam is announced to you.

The other thing I have done is doubles the size of my POI icons as they are far too small on the 3597. A free program called Fastzone Photo Resizer is ideal for this. Using POI converter allows you to just unzip the cam files, thus not overwrite the enlarged icons.

Enjoy your visit to the dark side that is garmin :o)

Thanks Guys.

Before I attempt anything so radical (and scary), Garmin Express told me that an update as available. I tried to download it but it said there isn't enough memory (it's got the 4Gb card that came in it!). I've just bought a 16gb card, but do I need to back up the old one to the PC then copy the contents onto the new one before attempting the upgrade or will the upgrade contain everything else anyway?

Copy everything to the card first. Might not be necessary but as I have no idea what you have on it that's the safe advice.
