Sygic's latest update to its GPS Navigation app adds a new Heads Up Display (HUD) mode which is available as in-app purchase.

V13.3 of Sygic GPS Navigation is available in the iOS App Store and Google Play now. The HUD option allows you to place your smartphone on the dashboard and have a simplified mirrored display to be reflected in the windscreen.

Alongside navigation information, speed and turn instructions, Sygic's HUD also displays live traffic information. The HUD feature can be purchased in-app for $4.99.

I've got the HUD but haven't seen the traffic. I'll have to fire it up and have a look later (if there is any traffic in my area)

I'm not convinced that the image will be that sharp... Also, how do you get it to stick on your dashboard without using anything?!

Their PR for this says: "Works without any additional accessories so you can enjoy a safe and comfortable drive when it gets dark"

But that's an "additional accessory" that Sygic say you don't need.

They're clearly having a go at Garmin for their HUD peripheral.

No, it does better than that You can stick a phone to a book, turn it so that the phone is at the bottom and shake it. The phone stays put. (I did it over a soft surface 'just in case Very Happy ) No problem on the dashboard of HWMBO's Jazz when mounted on the nearly vertical bit so that you can see the phone. Apparently if it gets dirty and does not work so well, you can wash it and it 'comes back'. I haven't had to do this for real yet but have washed one 'just to see'

I like the idea, lots of discussion about mounting your iPhone, the question I have does the HUD functionality actually work and how well?

If it works well why hasn't any other application developer included this functionality, this would be ideal for TomTom

Cameralert has HUD / Mirror Mode which is why I was thinking about how to mount the phone.

The sticky mats work well but melt in the sun & leave a nasty residue... Melted on my rib console & on the car dash.... Just be aware Rolling Eyes

I have the HUD and there is one major issue with it, the reflection on the windscreen screen give you a double image of the HUD display due to the layers of the glass. You get one focused and one slightly dimmer off set version of the same, real pain. Great idea but needs some sort of screen/film or whatever to sort it as to me its not usable, can just as well run it in normal mode on the phone. Real shame as its a great idea in principle.
