M62 cameras are live even when gantry signs are off

It has come to light the speed cameras, installed on gantries over the M62, are live at all times. Until this information was revealed, it was believed that they were only active when matrix signs were illuminated to indicate a reduced speed limit.

The news came to light in an exchange between a motorist and West Yorkshire Police via Twitter when they queried being flashed by gantry cameras when the speed limit signs were off.

It has since been clarified that the cameras, managed by the Highways Agency, are capable of enforcing both variable speed limits and the national speed limit and can operate independently of the matrix speed signs.

I've seen a few motorists get flashed but thee was a reduced limit at the time so wasn't aware of that.

The thing I'm still not clear on is that the speed signs are, technically, wrong. The highway code says speed limit signs are black text on a white background in a red circle. The ones in variable speed zones ("managed motorways") are white text on a black background...

Now if our registration plates have to stick to strict rules then so, surely, do speed limit signs. Has anyone got any info on this?! I've looked through the latest version of The Highway Code and there's no mention of alternative speed limit signs. The only mention of 'managed motorways' is a little bit that says some places have a variable speed limit...

I think you may find they DID change the rules. The report mentions other signs would be involved and at the end of the report it says the Dept of Transport changed the rules to make them all legal.

And TBH I thought it was basic pgpsw policy to recommend staying within the national limit in such stretches because the cameraas would be capable of being operated over the national limit - just an expectation of them always being set to ON, with either the reduced or national limit?

And just a bit further on between Brighouse and Ainley Top, there are to be some more Specs cameras installed any day, as they are extending the central reservation concrete project.

I only know this, as my best mate installed the cable last Monday, and warned me.....

If these things are live all the time, do we know what speed they trigger at. I regularly travel through these, the ones at Nottingham and the ones on M25 at 80 plus and have heard nothing as a result.

Recommendations are to trigger at 10% + 2mph so that'd be 79mph on a motorway. That IS just a recommendation though. Technically you could be prosecuted for doing 70.1mph as that is above the legal limit.

They are also switched on in the opposite direction even when there are less than 20 cars on the road have seen this twice on a Saturday evening. once heading to hartshead moor services from junc25 the traffic was busy near chain bar but clear going to Huddersfield quite a few got stung the limit was 40 a couple of weeks later the highways confusion agency triggered them again 70, 60, nothing , 50, 40. I was getting off at junc25 just lonesome me 2 empty lanes right down to roundabout 40mph limit, m62 to huddersfield no more than 15 cars on motorway no congestion for miles and 40mph. So can you trust them no and they try too justify limits for our safety hence I was doing less than limit and drive at 50mph on there unless told to do less and have my onboard camera viewing the road as am sure they need to justify putting them on and reducing speed.
