I recently took my Garmin nuvi 670 to Rome on a city walking break. This sat nav has been excellent in UK for driving.

However, satellite reception in the city was all but useless - presumably because most streets are lined by 6-storey buildings.

Has anyone got advice about an alternative sat nav which is suitable for these challenging conditions?

My iphone wasn't much use - slow updates on 3G, and poor battery life, plus anxiety about what it might be costing me.

Would be grateful for advice.

Philip

If you're surrounded by tall buildings no satnav will cope Wink

The mapping on my Nokia 808 had no trouble coping with the extremely narrow streets in Venice last year, even though I had mobile data turned off thereby suppressing AGPS, but your best bet would probably be to look for something that can use the Glonass satellites in addition to the GPS ones.

Totally not the answer you're looking for but i reckon the best solution would be a trip to the nearest Tourist Information Office and pick a copy of their paper Tourist Map, just like the ol'days.

Using a detailed paper map in Venice, I found that it was all too easy to miscount the streets you had passed (names not always visible) and lose your bearings (twisty streets too narrow to see the sun), so then had to resort to the GPS to find out where I was standing!

Fair enough, but if the streets are that twisty and narrow that you can't work out where you are, I doubt if a SatNav would have any benefit over a map.
