Is DEAD-RECKONING mandatory for LONDON?

Thanks in advance,

Let's take the example of Garmin.

2610/2620 WITHOUT Dead-reckoning

2650/2660 WITH Dead-reckoning

Personally I don't think so. My Navman SE sleeve holds a lock pretty well, although having a new Renault I do use an external (Figure of speech, as it sits on the luggage space cover in my Megane ST) antenna. Also, the dead-reckoning is implemented by making connections to the speedo and lighting systems, according to Garmin's website, and must be fitted by an authorised fitter. I've just checked the list and all the authorised fitters are in the USA. Seems quite a long way to go to have this fitted, I reckon!

Thanks Tim.

I suppose it's the same for most cities.

You mean that a GPS won't have lose signal in London, Paris, Geneva, Roma, Berlin...

I guess I would consider dead-reckoning if I lived in N-Y or H-G.

Another question. Are you a Londoner to answer this question? Laughing

I'm not saying it won't, but the only times I've ever lost signal in London is when I've gone through a tunnel/underpass, etc.. When this happens, it can take a while for me to re-acquire a lock, but I think that's because I keep on moving. Pulling over to the side of the road would probably speed up reacquisition time.

Yes, there were quite a few listed in NY, weren't there? And no, I'm not a Londoner. I'm from the Midlands but I live in the shadow of Gatport Airwick, about half way between London and Brighton. However, my work takes me all over the place, including Londonand the City.

Thanks for feedback.

I won't go for 'dead-reckoning' as price gap for this functionality is significant.
And I have to change my car next year...
For information, cost of installation in the UK is:

- Install: £100 + VAT
- Un-install: £75 + VAT

I would have to pay £1070 for SP 2650 + £117.5 for install (now) and more than £200 for un-install/re-install in new car (next year).
Prices obtained from:

Mr. Green

Not worth it!

I think I will pay £710 for a SP2610 at http://www.aspidshop.com/export/store/product_info.php?cPath=3_7_8&products_id=18

Thumbs Up

It's not apart from tunnels and under aerial motorways like M4 near Chiswick roundabout.

StreetPilot 2610 has a sensitive internal antenna.

I have not yet lost signal in London during 4 hours of driving, except maybe 5 seconds as I was driving under an aerial motorway.
