The crime is awful but what I wonder, and what worries me, is can we be tracked by our sat nav usage ?
How did they do it ?

The Police were able to completely track his movements.

No they weren't. They were able to extract a log of his movements from the device 'afterwards'. That is after he had been arrested and they had access to his device. They did not 'track' him regardless of what the news story claims.

The press do tend to make things up all the time, or edit out the real facts,
otherwise their stories would have little interest and not generate sales.

Depends on your definition of the word "track" surely. This wasn't live, but they were able to "view his tracks" and see where he had been.

I presume this is just the usual log that the satnav makes, like the TomTom road speed log etc. I'd assume that any device would have such a log. And also of course mobile phones will give a log of all the cells they connect to, so giving a track that could be found later.

And of course the sending to jail last year of someone who murdered a girl, and had turned his phone off for the night, shows that going anonymous doesn't really help much either. Best just be good!

Exactly

I'm Good

That's why I gave TomTom permission to download a piece of software onto my unit. They retrieve data every evening when I connect.

Don't worry - you get a screen asking whether you agree even though you agreed prior to letting them load the software.

And no, it can't tell my breed of dog, or what book I am reading or what I had for dinner.

But to get back to the original question, I think only those TomToms or GPS devices with sim cards can be tracked - like any mobile phone can as it locks on to various cells on the network as you move along.

Does anyone know if a non-live GPS device can be tracked? I would think not because they are basically receiving and not transmitting devices

It 'shouldn't' be tracked if its not transmitting but if you're worried about any device being tracked, take the battery out... No power means no tracking. Use a paper map and they'd still get you with all the cctv cameras everywhere. UK has most cctv cameras per head of population. Scary to think how many times you are recorded during each day. Most major junctions, roundabouts, main roads, traffic lights etc have mini cctv and number plate cameras monitoring traffic.

Big Brother is watching... Cool Laughing

A GPS/Satnav that does not have a SIM in cannot be tracked 'live'. It's a receive only device. But it may still have logs on it that can be analysed if the device is accessible.
