Don't bother backing it up using Home. Use Windows Explorer - it's much more reliable, predictable and controllable.

^ just what I was going to say!

You've been around a long time Stampy... how have you missed what must now be hundreds of posts from the regulars saying "when backing up your device use Windows Explorer, DON'T use TT Home"...... Wink

I normally back-up using TT Home and THEN using Windows Explorer!

I'll start doing it the other way round as from now!!!

Just as an update...

Backed up the TT using Explorer before FORMATTING it and following the instructions in the link above by dhn..

Still won't let me back-up using TT Home and every time I click on Operate my XL - TT Home crashes back to the Desktop...

Me-thinks it's a problem with TT Home which i updated a few days ago to v 2.8.3.2458.

Have you tried re-installing HOME?

If you want to go back a version number I can make it available, if needed. Smile

Un-installed TT Home, Re-booted computer, and cleaned registry - rebooted computer again

Re-installed TT Home - same problem.

If you have got a copy of the PREVIOUS TT Home - i'll give that a try!

Humour me ......... I know you said you'd cleaned the registry but try the freeware version of Revo Uninstaller from here:
http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

and completely uninstall Home.

Then get your fresh copy again and try it.

Thanks, have downloaded it and will give it a try later on today - have just got home from work...

Tried dhn's suggestion - it now allows me to make a back-up, but everytime I go to "Operate my XL" it crashes TT Home.

As I said - i'll try the 2.8.2.2264 version and report back!!

It's really strange, Stampy.

Take a look at a response to the error on a Microsoft forum:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/is-this-a-windows-error-code-component-returned/e87ae284-2204-4b89-89de-0aa5de2e70f4

btw, what browser do you use?

I'm using FireFox....

-update-

Un-installed the latest version again, ran the Revo Un-installer and then installed the version that Oldboy kindly posted...

Everything works again!!!!

I had the same problem with the new version of TT Home causing errors when attempting a backup. Working with TT Support by email for about a week, came up with this successful fix:

***
STEP 1 Admin Rights

Please make sure that you are logged onto Windows as the administrator.
You can check this by going to Start-Control Panel-User Accounts.

STEP 2 Firewalls

Configure any firewalls to allow TomTom HOME to connect to the Internet. Also ensure that you are not on a work network that is restricted in some way e.g. router, proxy or servers.

- Do you have a firewall? Please ensure that the firewall is configured to allow TomTom HOME to connect to the internet
- Are you on a work network? Ideally, you should be on a home network. A work network may be restricted in some way as mentioned above.
- Are you behind a proxy? You can configure TomTom HOME to connect via a proxy. Click on Tools-TomTom Preferences. Click on the Connection tab and enter the proxy settings here.
- Do you use a wireless internet connection? If so, please connect to your router with a network cable.

STEP 3 Reinstall HOME
- Close TomTom HOME on computer.
- Uninstall TomTom HOME (Start-Programs-TomTom) or (Control Panel Add and Remove Programs - Select TomTom HOME Remove)
- Once the uninstallation is complete, click on Start-Run (or hold the windows Key and tap R), in the search box that appears, type %appdata%
- At the top of the window, click Tools - Folder options - View, and tick the option for 'Show hidden file and folders'
- In the window that appears, delete the 'TomTom' folder

- Open c:\program files and delete the folder called 'TomTom HOME 2'.
- Click on Start, in the search box that appears, type %temp%, delete everything here.
- Go to My Documents and rename the 'TomTom' folder to 'TomTomOld'. This just moves it out of the way so that HOME can install cleanly.

Now can you please go to http://www.tomtom.com/home and download TomTom HOME. When you are asked to Run, Save or Cancel, please save the file to your desktop.

Once the download is complete, right click on the TomTom HOME file and select “Run as Administrator”
***

This fix will allow you to use the latest version of TT Home rather than using an outdated version of TT Home that did not exhibit this problem. I assume a fix is in the offing.

I'll give that a try in the coming days.....

Useful to see I pointed out and error, and reported it to TT - to no avail!!!
