Hi all,

Many years ago I used a website to create a list of POIs but don`t remember what it was called.

For example, I could type in Plumbers Merchants and it would compile a ov.2 file with them on. I assume it gets the info from Yellow pages or similar.

Any ideas what the site is called please?

I remember seeing one, but thought it only worked for the US. (and I can't even find my bookmark for that one now - sorry!)

Does Googling "online POI creator" come up with anything that rings any bells?

Hi bestyman,

A quick search of PGPSW reveals a website called:

www.poidownload.co.uk

It was created by Andrew Ace and the first mention of it in the PGPSW forums was around 24th November 2004.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be active any more.
Was this the one you were after?

Regards,

I reckon it might be... I had that site bookmarked too, but found it didn't work when I tried it last night.

Thanks,

I think that it may have been POIdownload. It`s a shame its not working anymore.

I used it many years ago then got an iphone and was unable to add POIs . It was only last night that I realised that it was possible with Diskaid.

Suprised that it never caught on. Perhaps it would do nowadays and could even charge a small fee.

I think he had to stop as he was using postcode information (copyright).
They stopped several useful sites.
Shame as it was useful.

Hmmm... not terribly impressed so far. Crying or Very sad

I typed in "Plumbers Merchants" in the UK and it came up with no results.
"Plumber" had just eleven results

No results at all for "Tropical fish shop", "Chip shop", or Firework shops (you can tell my interests!)
and "Kebab shop" came up with only TWO results for the whole of the UK.

"Co-Op" faired better, with 204 results, but the PGPSW free POIs file on this site has 808 branches listed.

Strapping expensive tropical fish to bangers and making them explode whilst eating a chip butty?

I read it as "Tropical Fish & Chip shop" - either expensive Fish & Chips (do they still come wrapped in newspaper) or Andy's local is in a warmer part of the world! Laughing

PGPSW could probably do even better if all the Somerfield branches were merged into the Co-op category, now that Somerfield has been taken over and all the branches reranded as Co-op!

Is there an easy way to merge two categories into one within the database?

I don't know, but I'll ask the question.

For laughs, I just put in 'hockey arenas' and Canada.

Came up with a listing of THREE places in all of Canada! Laughing

Almost sounds like TomTom's poi data ............. Wink
