Our family dog is a Lakeland Terrier. She's a dearly loved family pet and we'd all be heartbroken if she ever went missing. So Garmin's GTU-10 GPS Tracker is perfect for dog owners who worry that they may lose their dog whilst out walking.

But pet owners are far from the only target audience. Anyone who has something they want to track could make use of the GTU-10. Keep an eye on your children, attach it to your rucksack or leave it in your car.

how does the device report the position - if using mobile phone technology what's the coverage like? On a recent holiday I tried recording my position on Google Latitude using my mobile phone, In Surrey this works a dream but in Somerset it was hopeless due to lack of coverage.

It uses mobile data. Garmin don't disclose what mobile data standards the GTU-10 uses but I'd hazard a guess that it's using GPRS. That's the simplest, has the best coverage and is more than enough for passing the few bits of information necessary to report location and status.

So whilst you might struggle to load a web page or access Latitude, the GTU-10 may still be able to get send data over the more basic GPRS. But if it is unable to report its location due to coverage it will retry at set intervals.

also don't forget that SMS is supported in addition to GPRS (not trying to confuse you but SMS is possible both over the phone network and over the data (GPRS) network. So even if you have a weak phone signal without data coverage you can still manage to squeeze a SMS through.

Yes good point. Our daughter partook in a two-day Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme trek with her school this weekend and we used it to track her progress attached to her rucksack.

It worked superbly, gave us a quick and accurate location with history and was worth it for peace of mind if nothing else.
