I have just bought a Garmin GPSmap 62st and it comes with Recreational Map of Europe v3.1, when using it geocaching around a lake in the UK I noticed most of the time it shown me actually walking on the water! The path I was walking on seemed to be out of position by quite a few metres, some geocaches even were showing in the middle of the lake, does anyone know a reason why this should happen? Would it be something to do with the Position Format? I have had it set to hddd mm.mmm' but now notice there are many options and one being "British Grid"maybe I should have selected this?

If you expect your GPS to tie up with the map you need to set it to whichever map datum the map you have installed uses. I don't know anything about the map you have installed, so can't help further.

Hi,

Generally the "bundled" maps are just not that accurate. Garmin will probably charge you hundreds of Euros/Pounds/Dollars for "Topo" maps for all of Europe. A problem with these "Vector" maps is that you can zoom in far beyond the accuracy of the map and the only clue may be when the "detail" breaks down into straight lines. I can't explain geocaches "in the middle of a lake" unless they're on an island.

I don't believe that any adjustments will affect the internal (bundled) map. The Map Datum is to adjust for different external (paper or electronic) maps, but the internal map will almost certainly be WGS84. The Position Format only affects how the data is presented (in a similar way that you might measure a distance in km or miles but it won't affect how far you travel). For geocaching the dd mm.mmm format is the most used, but generally in the UK Grid Refences employ the British Grid (of the form AA nnn nnn to 100m accuracy, or AA nnnnn nnnnn on a GPS).

Cheers, Alan.

Thanks for the explanation makes a lot of sense and has saved me time messing with the different formats, much appreciated.
