I have just purchased a TomTom GO 910 which came without either a car or home dock.

The battery is flat, and before I go and buy the various bits required to charge it, I would just like to make sure that it is actually working.

Is there anybody in the Winchester (Hampshire, UK) area who has such a dock? I just want to charge my unit for 5 or 10 minutes to see whether it will turn on ...

The 910 desk dock used an external power supply for battery charging, it doesn't charge from the USB so you will need the charger and the dock - Mike

Thanks, Mike - I realised that.

I was just hoping that somebody might have a working (car or home) charger/dock near me that I could use for 5 mins. I just want to make sure that the unit works, before I go out and spend money on car and home docks and chargers ...

I believe that the 510 and 710 use the same charger/dock arrangement as the 910.

I've removed the post that caused offence and those that followed.

???

Was it sensible to buy a device without knowing if it works or not?
Hope you didn't pay much for it!

For the price of the required accessories I'd have thought you could pick up something reasonable that definitely works.

Darren - thanks.

Andy - It was a calculated risk. I bought it (from a trusted source) for £20. I'd probably get that much back on eBay as a "spares and repair" sale, if it doesn't work.

Equally, if it does work, then I can get aftermarket or second-hand docks/chargers for not too much money. It would have been nice to know whether the unit works or not before going down this route ...

I really only want it as a back-up on a driving holiday in France. I've got satnav built in to my BMW, both NDrive and Sygic on my Android phone, and my wife has various satnav solutions on her iPhone and iPad, so we're unlikely to get too lost!

The other (but much more expensive) option was to spend £180 on a brand new GO 950, with 12 months LIVE. Not sure that it would get the use to justify the expenditure.

Fair enough. Smile

Although I think by the time you've paid £20 plus £30 for a new windscreen dock and/or £20 for a new home dock I reckon you could have picked up something second-hand that was much more up to date (and definitely working!)

I never really understand why people pay crazy high prices for non-working items on ebay.

It's just money down the drain but easy money for the seller.

In most cases the repair costs will outweigh any savings.

Philip - do you have the car power lead ?? If so I have a couple of broken dock parts of a 910 holder which still work but are detached from the screen holder ... Still charge a 910 with your power lead if so , and they will work in car if you van sit the sat nav on an anti slip mat somewhere on your dashboard.

Would be happy to post to you.

Good luck

Many thanks for the kind offer, but I ended up purchasing a pair of home and car docks and chargers from eBay.

The good news is that the 910 is working fine, so my money wasn't wasted!
