I currently run TomTom v7.450 on a Dell Axim with WinMob v5, but it's getting on a bit now and I'd like to upgrade to a stand-alone unit.
Are there any budget (i.e. sub-£150) models which provide portait view, rather than the normal landscape view?
I like the TomTom platform but don't mind changing brands, as long as I can use the 2d top-down map view in portait (much prefer to see what's coming up rather than what's off to the side!).
I know a couple of the Nuvi models have this feature (currently 3790 and 3760) but they are £200+ and I don't need the advanced features... just looking for a straight-forward A-to-B navigator.
I might look at a second-hand Nuvi 2360 (I think that has portrait mode?) but ideally would future-proof with a current model.
Any suggestions gratefully received! |

I don't believe ANY current TomTom stand-alone device has a portrait mode, I'm afraid.

If you have a smartphone you could look at a sat nav app for that. The app would depend upon the OS of your smartphone, but most (if not all) of them do both portrait and landscape modes

I had considered the smartphone option - I don't have one at the moment so it would be an extra investment. If the only choice is a £200-300 Garmin then I'd consider a smartphone, but they seem to be at least £250 to buy which still feels like a lot of money for basic navigation!
I already have a BlackBerry for my job so don't really need an extra contract smartphone. |

You can get sat nav for some Blackberry models - just not sure which or how good it is. Hopefully somebody here could comment on that.

BlackBerry has a 2.43 screen ratio, but it's so small that I wouldn't want it for SatNav even if it could be rotated.
Couple of drawbacks to the Blackberry:
1) Small screen
2) No local map storage (I think all nav apps pull map data as you go, which is no good if you ever run out of mobile reception!)
3) Our company admin policy prevents 3rd party apps (obviously specific to me!).
BlackBerry is great for pedestrian use in the city, but I woulnd't want to use it as my main in-car sat nav.
I'm suprised that TomTom don't offer this feature - seems a simple tweak to implemenet, and I can't see how it would involve any major code problems, especially as it works fine using Navigator 7 on smartphones. |

Especially as the new Via 20 model has a sensor to automatically flip the screen 180 degrees if you mount it upside down.
Seems a real wasted opportunity not to offer a 90 degree rotation too.

I'm sure one of the very early TomTom Go models had a "rotate screen" icon.
The manual says "If the way you're positioning your TomTom system requires it, you can rotate the display with the preference 'Rotate screen'. Each time you use this, the display will be rotated further, until it's back to its original orientation."
It was this icon on the menu:
The way that's worded makes it sound like there's more than two options (i.e. that it allows 90 degree rotation), so it is something they've at least considered in the past. |

Original One XL on 8.010 can turn the screen upside down. Thinking at the time was this would stop the sd card falling out!
Best a TT can do is show the status bar on the right hand side, which gives you a square display.

The Go Classic and (I think) the Go-x00 had the ability to rotate the screen in 90 degree steps.
For later models that connect to the PC in the normal way so you can add files/ folders using Windows Explorer adding:
TASK_ROTATE_DISPLAY
To a custom menu text file should get the option back - Mike |

| The last unit I tried this on was the Start and it worked, there have been some updates since though and I haven't tried it for a while now but the Start isn't a very old device even though its not a very capable one - Mike |
