Recently changed my TomTom kit as seen in signature.

Generally very happy with the set up, though still learning/playing. But today I conducted my 1st call with the car kit and was totally disillusioned with the quality of the inbuilt speaker. It was a bit better with the iPhone setting nothing in speaker mode and nothing with the Aux connection to the radio.

Am I missing a trick here or just doomed to distorted or low volume calls?

Dave

You fiddle with the volume in the iPod control and on the phone itself whilst in a call and can improve, hopefully. There is a volume button on the kit too - you have to repeatedly push it upwards. However, I never got it loud enough for myself, so I dumped it eventually and got a Mio/Magellan one, which is great for volume and also has the GPS thingy to boost satellite signal, same as the TomTom one. There are other mounts, but I don't know what they're like.

Thanks for the reply Dennis, I did tweak the volume on the kit, when it was acceptable quality wise, it was too quiet and I was only doing 40mph (Honest), on the London car park.

I take you comment on a different kit on board, but to be honest I managed to get the phone past the inhouse accountant (missus), spending more on the kit, app and HD traffic got the silent treatment, so me isn't going there...Laughing Out Loud.

Is there no way to output the speaker to the aux on the radio then?

Dave

Yeah, I'm fortunate - what I spend is my loss apparently, so long as I do the "Hunter, Gatherer, Provider" thing. But another 100 for a second car kit was really over the top. Specially after I had bought another Bluetooth thing for 50 to fit on the sun visor and didn't do much good either!

Sorry, I don't know enough about that kit and I gave mine away to a deserving cause who I think is quite satisfied with it. Hasn't it got a little plughole at the side, next to the usb socket, for something - earphones, aux out? Getting too technical for me now, though - I'm good with on/off switches (most of the time) but after that I struggle.

Your quite right Dennis, the car kit is connected via the socket next to the usb power input, to the aux input on the car radio, and while it plays songs or tomtom instructions, during a call I get zilch. I am hoping I have forgotten something simple but fundamental.

Appreciate your help though Dennis.

Just one last thing I've remembered (and I sometimes get the same on my newer kit) I found that the phone call needed to be directed to the bluetooth thingy (it seemed to default away from that, not even to the iPhone speaker). It may be due to my having two bluetooth devices paired to the iPhone and I'm going to delete the pairing for the other thing as soon as I remember.

It was the BT connection that used the inbuilt speaker, even with the aux connected it still output to the kit speaker.

Thats what threw me, I thought it would, as it did, use the speaker as standard, and when you connect the aux lead to the radio it play through the car speaker but it didn't.

Yer've lost me now. Issue a small prayer for somebody clever to come and spot this.

I'm off to see if I can manage to connect up this new Virgin combined modem and router - I may be some time! Confused

I have knowledge of the Draytek routers, sadly not the Virgin ones, feel free to try me though.

If you use the iPhone with a standard 3.5mm jack from the phone to the car radio aux input then the phone call will be audible from the car radio (at least it is with my 3GS IOS4.2.1) However this set up relies on the in-phone mic for your end of the conversation and will probably be very noisy / inaudible for the other party at any sensible road speed.

I use a Parrot sunvisor mounted BT handsfree kit and it works very well. It has voice recognition for instigating calls and it 'speaks' the in bound caller name for received calls. The noise cancelling mic seems to work very well - no complaints from my friends yet. It has in inbuilt speaker which works well at motorway speeds. I use a VW POLO so it's not that quiet at 70ish!!

The iPod side of the iPhone and also the navigation s/w uses the 3.5mm socket so you can continue to listen to music or directions as you require.

Update:

Have tried various ways and still no good, using the handsfree with the inbuilt speaker is a no go quality wise and volume wise, so I give up.

To add to that frustration, is there any way to kill the turn instructions when connecting via the output to the aux on the car radio. I am now shouting at the damn thing when listening to the ipod and the radio mutes to play TomTom instructions...Grrrr Angry
