Bought Mio 478 yesterday from Argos - I've updated map with Miomore desktop 7.3

I understand I will get free map updates for a year - read on this forum that Argos customers get 2 years

Anyone know how to "activate" this subscription or is it done automatically by connecting to Miomore desktop?

Only flyer I have says to connect to Miomore desktop and downlaod a free map update 'within 30 days' but it doesn't make any mention of how long you might be able to do this for - doesn't even mention one year?

I got one a couple of days ago form Argos http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=86183

I think all you get is one map update (which it will offer when and if you get the desktop software to work) and 1 years non updating speed cameras database (pre-loaded).

TIP: Use the backup option in the desktop s/w before you upgrade the map.

My map upgraded okay but the process seems to erase the speed camera trial and so far support have replied twice both times with solutions that did not work.

Again, after you have your new map loaded, use the backup option as the "Recover Keys" option seems to brick the device then needing a restore.

Automan.

I wonder if after updating the map you have to drive another 40 miles to reset the speedcam updates - seems like a very flaky method

I have no speed-cams anymore Sad

Got my third email from their support...

Quote:
1) Connect the device to the PC using the USB cable provided
2) Open MioMore and click on My Mio Click on Reinstall Software and download the patch and save it on your PC.
3) Go to My computer and open the drive associated to the device
4) Delete all files and folders from the device except the device.xml
5) Open the MioMore software on the desktop
6) Click on the patch saved earlier and run the application to installed the software and follow the prompts on screen
7) Continue through the install process
8) Close MioMore and reopen
9) Load sound files using MioMore (Voice transfer)
10) Click on My Mio Recover Registration
11) Go to My Maps Select the MapData file from which you installed your map update and reload the maps.

That does not work either as it says the patch loader is missing and when you ask for it to download, resource not available.

Automan.

Seems like Mio backup stinks - You think they would make sure everything that should work does work before they start crippling it even more

I bought Mio C250 few years back and it was over a year before they finally got any updates to work on it

I suppose I should've learned

I have backed up the original files it came with so if all speedcams disappear i'll see if i can find them in there

Got another email from mio support

Quote:
There might be a temporary problem with the server if it does not find it. Please wait for a few hours and try again.

I bet what it really is that they do not have on their servers a recovery image for the 478 variant of the 400 series unit.

I've emailed them about speedcam updates (no subscriptions installed) & I've driven more than 40 miles

Do you know the difference between 470 series variants, particularly 470, 475 and 478

Stop Press - Just had reply to my email about speedcam updates

Quote:
I would like to let you know that the safety camera data that you have preinstalled on the device is a free trial and it will not appear in the subscriptions on the desktop. The data will stay on the device for 12 months and during this period you will not be getting any updates, unless you buy a subscription.

Please follow the link below if you would like to purchase the subscription:

.Safety camera alerts - 12 month free trial.
.Free updates

Just had another reply from Mio:

Quote:
Upon looking at the Argos advert the Safety camera alerts is shown as Free trial then the next point states Free Updates, this device is offered with a +2 years Map updates.

For the free map updates customers are required to register on a specific website which is shown on the device packaging.

So map updates last for 2 years and although I registered on Mio website it didn't say anything about it - I just have a login which i've always had - Someone mentioned typing in a number from your receipt and i haven't done that

I'm wondering whether I've registered properly - What is the mio web address you have for registering?

To register all I did was go to http://advantage.mio.com

Choose my country UK

That takes me here:

Created a login (which I've always had)

I've always had one of these accounts for my last sat nav but I dont see any confirmation of 2 years free map updates or any reference to Argos so I'm wondering whether I'm doing this right?

I registered my one also based on the link on the leaflet with the 10% off offer (which I never got any details on how to get the code or whatever).

I never saw anywhere on the argos website or leaflets anything about two years of free maps.

Also those two lines on their website I thought they were separate items.

.Safety camera alerts - 12 month free trial.
.Free updates

Granted, they could have made the statements a lot clearer.

I wrote to Mio about the Argos advert which is when they confirmed to me that the free updates refers to 2 years map updates and not speedcam updates - troube is it's not easy to talk to anyone at Argos either because they dont have a contact number
