Road deaths rise after switch-off Road deaths rise after switch-off
Road safety campaigners warned the situation should never be repeated as police prepared to turn the cameras back on next week.
They were switched off last August after Oxfordshire County Council decided it would not pay its £600,000 share of their operating costs.
Since then, 18 people have been killed in road accidents in the county, compared with 12 deaths in the same period for the previous year.
It was the first time road deaths had risen for four years. |
The full report can be read here.
I don't know whether it's poor reporting by the Oxford Mail or a lack of meaningful statistics from the authorities but there is no shown reason for the 18 deaths so is speeding responsible for these deaths?
If you read the comments, one death was apparently caused by a traffic calming measure, where there is no speed camera.

Lies... damn lies.... and statistics.
Without wanting to trivialise the loss of human life and the obvious suffering involved, looking at it purely statistically, a single increase from 12 to 18 over a single measurement period is probably pretty meaningless. |

From the article: Quote: | The county experienced the highest number of serious accidents since 2004, although there was a slight decrease in serious collisions at the sites of 72 speed camera boxes. |
So they don't need to reinstate the cameras where they are, do they, surely they need to MOVE them to where the increased accidents/fatalities are happening ...?? _________________ David

And we have had some of the worst snowfalls in the last six months. I wonder how many may have been due to winter weather.
As always, objective analisys of statistics, NOT! _________________ Dom

Quote: | although there was a slight decrease in serious collisions at the sites of 72 speed camera boxes. | So there were actually fewer accidents at the sites of the switched off cameras. The conclusion that I draw from this is that the statistics indicate that to reduce the number of accidents near speed cameras, switch them off and tell everyone that they are not in use This would be a statistically proven contribution to road safety. To save even more money, sell off the innards to a county that is foolish enough to keep them switched on, despite what the statistics prove |
