Cannot recognise copied SD card - Rider v2

I've tried every way I can think of to copy my Rider V2's original SD card to a spare that the Rider V2 will recognise. But every time itSays "No maps found!". Obviously, it recognises the TomTom original card, but I really would prefer to use the backup so I have the original to fall back on.

The spare card (I've actually tried 4 different ones) is normal SD, not SDHC. I've formatted it as FAT32. I've given it the same name off TOMTOMDISK. I've tried copying card to card, card to hard disk to card, Home2 backup of original and restore to new card. I've tried ddifffereent makes off card including TDK and SanDisk. I'm using 2GB cards although the original is only half a GB.

The app version is 7.901 and map version is 715.1703.

The PC OS is Windows 7.

Any ideas anyone?

The problem is you probably can't do this.

SD stands for Secure Digital. The contents can be locked to a particular card and whilst you can copy the contents it can be set so it won't work with another card. If the maps were supplied on an SD card from TomTom chances are this is the case. All you can do is backup the contents in case of corruption but you'll always have to use the same physical SD card.

Of course there it could also be that you haven't copied all the files! Have you un-hidden system and hidden files? Could be you haven't copied one all important file.

However i suspect my first answer may be correct....

You need a good quality high speed SD card max size 2GB, certain SD cards sourced from the likes of E-Bay are cheap copies and the TomTom will reject them resulting in the flashing red cross when the device boots up even with all the files and folders present and correct - mike

Thanks for the replies, guys. Others who have Riders on another forum have said that it ought to be possible, and on my wife's TomTom One, I did copy the original card and it is running on a 1GB Kingston card. So unless they've introduced a form of copy protection more recently, or specifically for the Rider, I'd have thought it possible.

I bought the SanDisk as a good make, and it is 2GB. I run the PC showing hiddden files and folders. I'd have thought the TomTom backup and restore would have ensured a like for like copy.

I'll keep digging, and will post back if I find a way

I have a TT510 and like the TT Rider it uses only an SD card as it has no internal memory. I copied the original card within weeks of purchasing the unit with the idea of always having a backup with me.

There has never been a problem and over the years I keep copying the running one to another one, the original is still basically untouched except for the few updates that would have been done in the first few weeks.

I have never formatted any cards that I have purchased so I have no idea what format they are and they do not have a name perhaps one of these two variations to what you are doing maybe the answer.

I have checked the properties of one card but it says nothing about the format, only that the file system is RAW, if that helps.

I have just checked the properties of the original card and that says the file system is FAT so that's not the answer at least not for a 510, as it works with FAT and RAW. the original does have a name of TomTom whilst its copy has no name.

When I make a copy I first delete anything and everything that maybe on the receiving card. Next select anything and everything that on on the delivering card then choose copy (hidden files would be shown) then paste it to the receiving card.

FAT 16 and FAT 32 are not the same, but they are both FAT file systems. Thought you were suggesting that being Linux it needed some other file system such as HFS or ext3?

I have just made another check by removing the SD card that my 510 is running on currently that also has a file system of RAW.

Its possible but I cannot be sure that both of the cards have previously been used and formatted in my Nikon camera and it formats them to RAW.

The point being my 520 will run with FAT or RAW so that doesn't seem to be the root of the problem with the Rider.

I also have a backup SD card for my 520 device just checked that and it says the file system is FAT.

Just did some more checks using the 520 the card does have a name of TomTom and if I put the card in the 520 it boots automatically from the card.

With card removed it boots of course from the internal memory.
