I am a moderator at a large TomTom forum in North America. An announcement at the top of every forum is this:

TomTom Forums has been experiencing an increase in posts by members that make reference to illegal (warez) sites.

Such sites will not be promoted, advertised or tolerated at TomTom Forums and members making such posts run the risk of being banned from here permanently.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

and it's had over 20,000 views in the year or so it's been posted.

In my opinion, Paul was doing what a good moderator should be doing...

(and I have banned users for less......)

Could you clarify if you read the deleted post?

Based on the totally over the top and libelous comments made by the moderator, I'd think I should be banned too! However, the comments made are simply not true. There was absolutely no mention of maps at all - legal or otherwise! It's just completely made up.

I made it quite clear the reason for the post, and the point I was making - primarily that the bug was widely known nearly a year ago.

How could I have referenced this fact otherwise? I can accept people disagree with me, what I can't and won't accept is an accusation that I'm using illegally obtained maps which is completely and utterly untrue - regardless of the validity of my post.

BTW, technically your post references these sites, as does this one. Pretty much to the same extent my original post did.

I'm gonna go sleep it off now as I'm really quite annoyed and liable to post things i regret! Please don't think I'm running away though - I intend to clear my name and get an apology from the moderator for the made up rubbish posted about me. Cheers.

Calm down!.

Moderators are volunteers who have to read many posts and when one hints at dodgy forums that could set alarm bells ringing and a quick decision could be to remove it. I personally would not have removed that post but I could see how someone wary of issues relating to dodgy forums could.

I would expect that pressure is brought to bear by TomTom on forum managers not to promote dodgy sites in that TomTom will not support forums and their managers that do not toe the line with advance information and beta products. It is a bit of a head in the sand approach from TomTom as anyone can use a search engine to find forums with any content they like.

Even dodgy sites have some useful information on them but they all suffer from the major problem is that they have one or two people doing the illegal and also the occasional legal bit of work and the rest of the participants are spongers wanting to know how they can use the pirate stuff on their device or wingeing that the hacks are not perfect.

By keeping out of the dodgy stuff, PGPSW is far more mutual with nearly everyone helping everyone else and I personally want to see it remain that way, although I would like to see TomTom add some visible support here as a reward for keeping it that way.

The good news is I'm much calmer :P

I will take it up with the mod in question via PM rather than drag this further off topic (though I still think my post should be returned.)

I wanna make one thing clear: at no point whatsoever did I mention maps of any kind - illegal or legal! I didn't even hint at any related mapping topic. I have no reason to brag - I was making a valid point. Thats why the mods comment got me riled. Anyway - I'm done Smile

You are correct and i made a mistake. At no point did you mention dodgy maps.

Cracked Navcores, yes.

Pirate Maps, no.

I apologise for that.

However the post remains out of view as it contains certian "tit bits" of information that might be helpful to those wishing to use pirate maps.

Its a shame you still feel the need to accuse me of bragging about things, and still seem to be giving me attitude. I accept my post was worded badly with regard to navcores, but as mentioned, 9.02x (x50 edition) is available from the tomtom website, and runs on x40 without any cracking whatsoever.

Look I accept that is a grey area, but I'm afraid I see it as loading a custom firmware onto my phone style naughtiness. If thats where we differ, then so be it I guess, but thats my view.

Anyway, back to the original point - this problem has been known about for nearly a year, and tomtom STILL went ahead and released software I could have told them wouldn't work!

The warning has disappeared from the TomTom Support site regarding the x40 Live errors after the Navcore 9 update.

Does ths mean the problem is resolved?

If so has anyone tried and tested please?

Best regards,

My my new Tom Tom 740 doesn't connect to Live service because of the new software download. Whilst I was only looking for a fix to error 1008, this has opened up my eyes to a whole new underworld.
I have now become aware of several sites that I didn't know existed and it must be amazing how many customers they are driving to these alternate sites to find a fix.
Until Tom Tom fix the issue they will be the losers.

This huge gaffe (huge even by Tomtom's standards) is now nearly a month old, with no hint of a fix.

Great work, Tomtom. Rolling Eyes

To be fair to TomTom, they have acknowledged the problem and have advised the 'fix' is to reinstall v837.1 for the time being.

But how many people are updating and "breaking" their TomTom's *still*, and probably not realising that it is broken until they hit traffic and wonder why Live isn't working? And then you have to go through the hassle of removing something that is known to be broken? Why don't they stop it being available? And no, the fact that "only" the UK is affected by it is not sufficient grounds to keep it.

This is what I really can't understand. Either they should stop offering the update through Home, or at least don't offer it to UK users. It's not like it's that hard to determine which country a user's IP is from. As it is there are probably still dozens of people who are loosing their LIVE services every day.

Now that they have let the genie out of the bottle by officially making Navcore 9 available for the x40 series they clearly can't turn turtle and withdraw it by admitting that their software developers are so utterly useless that they can't work out how to fix the problem with the UK SIM cards. So the only solution is for them to plug on and fix the matter.

I'm still at a loss to know why it should be quite so difficult to rectify this issue and I can only assume that the company's three executive directors simply do not have their finger on the pulse and instead prefer to drift around surrounded by a haze formed by their own PR department claiming that all is really as fantastic about their products as they would like to have you believe.

Certainly it would appear that Messrs Goddijn, Wyatt and de Taeye (see http://investors.tomtom.com/management.cfm) only understand about things like revenue streams, business plans and IPRs and are so grandiose and self important that none of them ever use a TomTom unit themselves (perhaps they know how useless they are and have brought something robust from the US Military to use instead or perhaps they only ever use a bicycle to get to work like most members of TomTom's Amsterdam based tech support team) or have the least personal interest in technical matters or keeping abreast of day to day criticisms of the company about its technical failings in the various online web discussion forums. When you connect to Home surely it can recognise that you have a UK model and therefore not offer to upgrade to version 9 Question

No sorry it is Tomtom we are talking about Laughing
