I would be interested to find out if anybody has much experience of using the hibernation mode.

I have been doing some trials in nearby tree-lined fields so that I knew where I was on the 1:25k map (assuming that the field boundaries were correct!).

Coming out of hibernation mode:

Satellite lock was achieved between 4 seconds and 12 seconds from pressing the power button, although mainly after about 6 to 8 seconds. Factors that affected this may have been how much of the sky was visible, and how long it was since I last reactivated the unit. The GPS map screen was set to update every second during these tests.

Sometimes I found that my new position indicated on the screen was up to 300 feet from where I was actually standing, even though the accuracy figure, as shown at the foot of the GPS Status screen, had quickly settled at about 16 feet. However, if I walked a few paces the cursor suddenly shifted to the correct location on the map screen. The total time was then about 45 seconds. If I just stood still, occasionally it could take as long as 2 minutes for the cursor to jump to the correct location on the screen.

Note that using hibernation mode turns trail logging off, and consequently the data in the fields on the Trip Log screen become distorted. No trail is recorded until the unit is reactivated from hibernation mode again (the snail trail connects in a straight line from where the unit was last put into hibernation mode i.e. when the power button was pressed to switch it off, with hibernation mode enabled).

In one of the Satmap overview guides to version 1.40, it was suggested that hibernation mode can give users over 100 hours of battery life.

I haven't managed to use it in hibernation mode for long enough to flatten the standard Li-Pol battery before reaching a 240v socket yet. With a view towards future long distance walks involving wild camping, I would like to know how many days people have managed to get using hibernation mode combined with the typical power saving settings (such as screen off after 30 seconds, screen updates every 4 seconds, and 40% backlight).
