You're making many assumptions there! This "TomTom Appstore" is an invention dreamed up based on some very vague statements made at the GO 1000 Launch. I was there and nothing was said that gave any basis for the wild speculation that resulted.

When we asked TT for clarification they suggested that the appstore comments were directed at their automtive market customers, allowing them to choose which modules they wished to offer in their TT based in-car system.
Quote:
This stops all the hundreds of community based uploads which go unchecked and installed through TomTom Home - ugly icons, incorrect data, and deliberate inaccuracies...

Many of those community downloads are made because TomTom's data is so laughably poor. Whilst there may well be some inaccurate POI sets available, they would likely cover data that TT don't even offer and why would they be deliberately inaccurate?

Now if TT do create an Appstore we will of course look at producing a solution that works with it. But I think any such solution is a very long way off at best and personally unlikely.

We will see ...

I go for iGo these days, much more customisable, more accurate than TomTom (I have compared them in the west country). iGo isn't without it's problems but TomTom are turning into a bunch of nazis like Apple - think and do what we say, not what you want. Strange for a Dutch company, you'd think they'd have learned from history!

Can I ask in what way you find iOGO more accurate? I thought iGO use Tele Atlas map data too?

Unless you count ignoring the release of Mobile Maps 10 for windows mobile. That's the version above the one Darren Posted: Wed Feb 24, 2010 3:19 pm.

I accept that TT make very usable devices (I've had 3 myself) but don't think they are the universal 'best thing since slice bread' supplier. I have found customer support woeful and much of what they do is gimicky revenue generating stuff (map updates), unreliable 'live' services, or simply poor quality like their own camera database.

I am in need of a new device at present and have tried N Drive on Iphone and Co-pilot on HTC HD2, neither of which I have found to be an adequate substitue for a stand alone device such as a TT. One of the most important features for me is the ability install 3rd party POI's such as the PGPSW databate, also have several for stores and hotels which is important to me for work, without this functionality I would look elsewhere than TT.

Limiting the ability of the device by locking out 3rd party POI's is not the way forward, TT will be seen as overcontrolling and they will alienate customers. If their own 'app store' were to become a reality that may offer an acceptable solution, but I'm not sure it is in the nature of TT to go that route.

I was almost on the point of buying an XL-2, thanks to the good advice on here I will not be doing that so will instead get an XL that will give me the freedom to use 3rd party POI's.

Though not the biggest fan of the Twitter / Facebook type media myself I can certainly understand that they would be effective in capturing widespread opinion on the matter.

while not a standalone device, you could give Sygic a try - available for iphone, android and winmob - it's very very similar to tomtom and even uses the same POI warnings set up etc.

You could try it but if you do buy it, be absolutely sure you get Mobile Maps 10 before you install it and activate it. I bought SMM10 for my HD2 as a download in March but the download was SMM9, as 10 hadn't actually been released then despite what their web site said. It was not a patch on TTN6, which I used to run on my hx4700.
Finally this month I got my offer of a free upgrade (to bring what I had paid for to what I had received) but Sygic has no real uninstall, indeed no proper install process. Doing what they said gave an unusable system. I had to delete all of the files and folders, and install SMM10 afresh.
It worked mostly until Saturday, when it gave a RAM 13340 error (eh?). I've spent the afternoon removing all of the old folders again, deleting everything that could possibly be Sygic, and even then the desktop assistant thought it was still installed on my HD2.
It feels less featured, but I don't think it really is. It is very similar to TTN to use. The maps look odd because they lose detail as you are zoomed out. The road colours are not as I'd choose, yellow motorways, pale yellow dual carriageways, and everything else white. A blue route and it zooms in closer than TT. No alternative schemes like TTN.
Only one UK voice, and no extras to buy.
I prefer it to Copilot and Navigon, both of which i used for their trial periods and discounted.
Routes seem as good as TT, better than Copilot. Some errors on side roads that have never been for traffic, but that is Teleatlas's fault.
It is fairly fast at routing, and if you go off route it varies in re-routing. Sometimes it is almost instantaneous, other times it seems to first try to get you back to your old route before eventually giving in. Re-routing for problems ahead is not so good; I cannot find a way to avoid an area on the map, just a blockage which is set distances up to 30m away on your route. So if I know I want to go somewhere and avoid a horse trials en route (which I did) i had to do it as an itinerary and in effect choose my own route.
So far traffic and weather don't do anything. Speed cameras need a subscription. I've installed the PGPSW speed camera database and several POIs all after conversion.
My version (in the about tab) is 8.12, build R-11566 MD, with map version 7.80. UK maps are copyright Teleatlas.

Welll ... what a ****ing idiot I am ... just been out and bought a Nuvi 1300 .. got home registered it ... tried to find our weekend holiday location and it doesn't recognize the postcode ... or the village name ...what a total heap of junk ... going straight back to Halfrauds in the morning ... looks like I am going to have to swallow my pride and get a TT.

This is quite ridiculous ... both the postcode and village name show up in all on line services .... I'm at a complete loss to understand how they are missing form the Garmin database ... I really wanted to find an alternative to TT ...what a blooody failure ... So much for full 7 digit postcodes ...

Oh bu**er, in the interest of fairness it looks like I will have to eat a piece of humble pie here ... in my haste and enthusiasm to try the device I used the location of our weekend retreat (and a couple of places near to it) ... to check it's routing ... those locations being in Wales ... even though the device is only UK & Ireland you have to select the country for it to search in ... as I am in England that is the default search location ... I didn't notice that ... Oooops (in fairness to myself that is different to TT) ... good job I worked this out for myself before making a fool of myself in Halfrauds Laughing Laughing Laughing

... the whole point of having one, at least for me, is to be able to add my own POIs and configure them with appropriate sounds, etc.

If that feature is removed then I for one will not be buying a new TT device.

The way they price their map updates is another irritation :-(

Given the excellent free OVI maps software on my Nokia 5800 with free navigation and the fact that the maps seem more current than TTs - if there were a SpeedCamera app for the 5800 that worked with the PocketGPS database then I'd probably rarely use the TT.

As I said earlier in this thread that I would contact TT expressing my concerns about the reduced user configuration capabilities of their new systems.

Well - I finally got a reply this morning which in essence says that they don't understand my concerns and need more information!! So I have now followed up my initial query with the info that has been mentioned here. Maybe I'll have a reply by next weekend.

As for the posting by Devolution -
'This stops all the hundreds of community based uploads which go unchecked and installed through TomTom Home - ugly icons, incorrect data, and deliberate inaccuracies...

All PGPSW has to do is submit a free Camera Alert app for approval and it can then be downloaded and installed into the closed system. In fact such a method would mean an app which installs, and automatically puts all the voice alerts in without having to select each one manually and input a warning distance. An even better solution than the current methods, reducing errors and support tickets.
'

I want the ability to upload my own icons and data. I do not want the subjective analysis of 'ugly icons and incorrect data' decided by somebody that apparently thinks they know better and what is good for me. I wonder how it will be checked.

As for 'puts all the voice alerts in without having to select each one manually and input a warning distance', this holds even more true. I want to configure MY system in MY way and not how somebody else wants or tells me.

I want to be in control of the system I purchase and not functioning at the whim of an apps store. There are too many reports of iPhone apps being removed, often at the whim of the apps store or under pressure from larger companies that are seeing apps as competition to their own offering.

The reduction of function available to me as a consumer means that I will consider another TT to replace my current elderly device.
