I hope someone can explain something to me here as Im a bit confused I use a tom tom 940 with pocket gps speedcameras , but i also see for around 99pounds you can get these kind of things http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchCmd?srch=speedcamera&action=search&storeId=10001&catalogId=10151&langId=-1 ie speed camera dections from road angel stuff like the snooper, but it says you have to update the camera database from a pc??? so whats the point in having one of these when you can buy a starter tom tom for the same price as one of these ?

I read that some of these "snoopers" know what specs cameras are live and which ones are dummies ?? how do they know this when you have to download the database from the net ? and are they any better than just buying a sat nav ?

Given that road angel do the tomtom camera database and how bad that is with missing speed cameras , are the roadangels snoopers databases any difference.

I think you already know the answer. These seem to be rather flexible in their interpretation of the word "Detector". There are detectors on the market, which detect radar transmissions from speed cameras, but generally the only use is to detect whether a camera is active - in the case of mobile cameras, you've already been trapped before you can react to any warning from them.

The question is how long detectors will be allowed to be used legally anyway?

So you're left with the downloaded database ones like PGPSW. We believe that not many are like pgpsw, which is to say they try, but none of them get anywhere near the coverage and accuracy we have.

And none of those listed by Halfords offer 'detection'. They use a database of locations just like we do.

At the end of the day the differentiation is how the alerts are delivered AND the accuracy of the data.

TomTom, Garmin etc have the benefit of ease of install for their own data and Garmin reserve directional alerts for their own use.

Similarly some people only want a dedicated device, they may already have nav in-car and so choose a device such as a Road Angel.

BUT at the end of the day, the data is the most important part and we believe that is where we are streets ahead in terms of quality, accuracy and frequency of updates.

I came across an interesting piece of kit this week called the 'Inforad K1' : http://www.gomemory.co.uk/inforad-k1-speed-camera-warning-system.html

..there's a video on there (but the audio is in French unfortunately) showing that the system seems to 'detect' the cameras on approach in the case that they are not already included in the main database.. That is a cool feature if this is so!

If you use Search you will see the K1 has been discussed many times here. We supply the speed camera data to Inforad.

It has no 'detection' ability. It is a GPS based device that uses a database of locations, nothing more.
