Hi, I am on the verge of getting a Palm-based GPS, and Garmin's iQue 3600 seems to be the only one on the market.

It seems highly rated, but it has been out I think almost a year. Has anyone heard of any successor to this, by Garmin, or of any other Palm-based GPS PDAs that are available?

It would be *very* sweet to have an ique with bluetooth....

I am not interested in a PocketPC...

Thanks for any help!
Dave

There are other Palm based systems. TomTom, Navman, Mapopolis, Kirrio all have Palm based systems.

Thanks for the scoop, Dave.

I will check into these. I instinctively liked the notion of the GPS being built in (which most/all of these probably are not), though I am not sure why. Does anyone have any opinion/experience with this?

One advantage perhaps is the Garmin ique has an external antenna jack, and I would assume that the others do not if they are just an expansion module. But perhaps those operate good enough if they are in the windshield in a PDA holder. Is this right?

For me, the real killer feature on the software side would be if the mapping software worked for both a PDA and also a laptop (e.g., with my NEMA-compliant DeLorme Earthmate USB). From what I have seen, however, folks like TomTom only seem to make for a Palm or a laptop, but not both. Has anyone seen any that work for both? A bluetooth module could possibly (if the software was available for both the palm and the laptop), and if it did I would consider abandoning my soft requirement for the gps module to be built-in.

I may well go with one of the others that Dave listed, however, for another reason. I think that Bluetooth could really be handy, especially with a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone. I will be having an hour commute on a train the next year, and that could be really handy.

Does anyone have a strong favorite among the palm based ones Dave mentioned: TomTom, Navman, Mapopolis, Kirrio? If so, why?

Any comments or sanity checks or other observations/experiences with the practicalities of the above would be profoundly appreciated. I will be on sabbatical in Norway for a year with my family (including driving around visiting places), and traveling to visit colleagues on the continent, so I will get a lot of use out of it! And I will be happy to send a postcard from Norway to anyone who provides useful advice (and asks for this).

Thanks much,
Dave

We have a review of the TomTom for Palm package, and will have in a few days a review on the Navman offering for the Palm.

Most of the Palm setups really will be wireless, but there are some cabled GPS Mouse setups.

From experience I can say both the TomTom and Navman options are quite good, check back in a couple of days for the Navman Palm review.

The iQue was announced at least 9-12 months before it was available so even if we did hear of a new one, it would be a year before you could have it!

From what I have heard, the main disadvantages are that the batteries on the iQue only last about 45 minutes under heavy use.

Also, I think you are locked into using Garmin's GPS mapping software on the iQue which can be expensive. As far as I know you can't run some other software like Tom Tom or use scanned maps (ie Ozi Explorer) on it if you decide you want to switch.

With a Pocket PC and seperate GPS receiver you have the flexibilty to choose which software you want to run.

Woops! I've been spotted! 8O

Maybe I should include a height with that? 185 feet, apparently. Laughing
