I have a Go 720 and have found it to be slow and sluggish to respond when in use.
I plugged it into the computer today and found I only have 32Mb free of the 1.91Gb internal storage (HDD?)it has.
Most of that seems to be the Western Europe map folder at 1.71Gb.
Does it delete old map data when you update, or just add new data?
Basically is there anyway to slim down the amount of data that stored on the device without loosing any function?
Also, is there any way to totally re-install a fresh set-up (latest O/S and latest map only), i.e, not from one of my back ups, but from TomTom?

The amount of free storage space in the flash memory won't make any difference to the performance, as the unit doesn't use that memory for working space.
What will slow the unit down is how many POI categories you have selected to "show on map". Reduce that as much as possible and see if that improves things.
When you update with a new map, the entire map is replaced with the new version. Mapshare corrections however, just add a small amount of data to the existing map.
Replacing the operating system is easy, you just make a backup, then delete all the "loose" files, i.e. those NOT in a folder. Then connect to Home and download a new version by selecting "update my device".
As for maps, if you have bought one from TomTom on-line, it can be downloaded again for upto a year. If not, then you only have your backups.
If you don't believe me, or you just want to try it, you can always move the entire map folder ("Western Europe" or whatever yours is called) onto an SD card. The TT will see it on there just fine, and you'll then have loads of space on the internal memory.
