pocketgpsworld.comHungarian navigation software provider, Nav N Go, have announced that their iGO Amigo software now runs on Android. Unlike their iPhone version there is no specific release from Nav N Go but the press release implies that the final versions will be released by 3rd party companies, much like with their PNDs.

There are no other details yet but Nav N Go are "[looking] forward to the imminent launch of several Android products and will disclose in the near future which Android-based devices will carry its software."

The full press release is shown below:

Nav N Go extends its navigation solutions from Windows Mobile and iPhone onto Android platform

Nav N Go, the leading white-label navigation software provider, today announced the availability of its iGO amigo navigation solution on an additional mobile platform, Google's Android. The company previously announced iGO My way-based products for Windows Mobile and iPhone.

"Smartphones increasingly are being embraced at the Consumer and Enterprise level, and as that process of adoption grows, it is critical that we enable our partners to compete on these platforms," said Sergio Ghirardelli, Vice President for Western Europe at Nav N Go. "The addition of Android to our list of supported platforms proves that we aim at rapidly offering more solutions on more platforms."

With users expecting an increased range of mobile functions for emailing, web-surfing, navigating or downloading applications from portals like Apple's App Store or Google's Android Market, Nav N Go is extending its compatibility range to meet the market's demand for turn-by-turn navigation and other location aware services. Similar to the other platforms, the Android- compatible version will offer the software's unparalleled 3D visualization technology, a fast and efficient route planning engine and many other popular features.

"The growing popularity of GPS-smartphones with large touch screen such as the iPhone is driving sales of on-board navigation", says ABI Research Practice Director Dominique Bonte. "Global yearly shipments of handset-based navigation software are expected to increase from 9.8 million in 2009 to 15.6 million in 2010 and 24.3 million in 2011. Open source mobile operating systems such as Android and Symbian will further boost growth in the US and Europe."

Nav N Go launched the iGO amigo product line for the Windows platform at CeBIT in March 2009 and the iPhone 3G solution in August 2009. The company looks forward to the imminent launch of several Android products and will disclose in the near future which Android-based devices will carry its software.

there's Sygic too but it's not in the Marketplace. You'd have to ask someone else for suppliers but it IS available!

actually, a forum search brings up this post: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=509068#509068

Hi All,

So 4 months on since the press release and there's not been a single peep out of Navngo about the availability of their software on Android devices.

They bleat on about their iPhone app but do they have nothing more to say about the Android version?

Many thanks

JT

from the MWC blog:

Quote:
On the Android-front Nav N Go are still sticking to their roots as a 'white label' company. There are no plans yet to release an iGO branded version of their navigation software for Android. One issue they face is that Google do not allow Hungarian (and other Eastern European countries) to sell in the Android Market. SO unless they shift their offices to Paris or Google change their policies then this might never even happen. All is not lost, however, as the Samsung Omnia II (Hungarian edition) comes pre-loaded with the iGO navigation software. It comes with a 60 day free trial and then a full license can be purchased from Naviextras.com. Motorola have also got in on the game but not just for Hungarian devices. Any Motorola 'Motonav' phone, such as the Motorola Milestone, use Nav N Go's navigation solution, albeit branded for Motorola.

Hmm, well that's a shirty dame!

Thanks for the update MaFt - I obviously missed that first time around. I'm an HTC fanboy and have a Desire on pre-order so it looks like I'm going have to desert NNG Sad and seriously consider Sygic after all.

Cheers!
