D'you mean you opened mapsettings.cfg, edited it, then saved it as .OV2? Why? I'm asking from interest, not any understanding of what you're trying to do.

How happy are you with your backup situation - have you got one (Windows Explorer) of the device before you did this?

Are you following this method by Mikealder?

Note that it appears first in the list because of the leading underscore character in the name, not simply because you've saved it as an OV2 file.

I wonder if it's as simple as you saved it as _Eug.ov2 instead of just _Eug? Has it become _Eug.ov2.ov2? Have you looked at/for it in Win Explorer?

Genie Backup runs every night and the TomTom folder on my PC is included.

I suspect Dennis is referring to backing up the DEVICE and not the folder of stuff downloaded by TT Home. See FAQ 1

If you haven't done this do it NOW.

Which question shall we try to answer, or which problem shall we try to solve?

_Eug is NOT your Favourites. It's a POI category called _Eug. To navigate to any of the entries in that category, you select Navigate to, Point of Interest, then choose the POI category _Eug, then the individual POI within that.

Favourites is a TomTom group, specifically Favourites which you create on a day to day basis whenever you want the convenience of a shorter method for Navigate to. They are saved in the mapsettings.cfg file (along with all sorts of other Recent Destinations).

The POIEdit program creates a Points of Interest file NOT a Favourites file (even though they may be your favourite destinations).

So, it's either Navigate to Favourite - where Favourite is a destination which you have saved in the device under Favourites.

OR it's Navigate to Point of Interest - where you then select a POI category - in this case _Eug (which, because you've named it beginning with an underscore, will appear first in the list of Points of Interest from which you select. If you called it Eug without the underscore, it would appear in alphabetical sequence somewhere after Airports). It is unfortunate that we are calling _Eug your favourites, because they are not Favourites as TomTom knows them - they are simply your favourite destinations in the form of Points of Interest.

The _Eug.ov2 contains 17 destinations which were pruned from mapsettings.cfg. It was saved to the device via a USB stick and also saved to the PC (TomTom UK FR folder).

Looking at the PC file in POIEdit shows the 17 destinations. Looking at the file in the SD card using the USB stick shows the same 17 destinations. These are Points of Interest

Put the card back in TomTom and select Navigate to Favourite shows 7 destinations. These are Favourites, not the _Eug file.

The option for Eug is not showing on the Navigate to screen. Yes they are - Navigate to .... Point of Interest ... {List of Points of Interest Categories} _Eug... choose one of the 17

On a couple of final notes of question....
You say you use a USB stick - would that be "stick" spelled "Card Reader" into which you insert the SD card?
You say you backup to the Folder "TomTom UK FR". When we talk of this action, we mean we use Windows Explorer to copy and paste everything from the device (or SD card) to a folder on the PC, creating a NEW folder for each time we do a backup - I am simple at this, so my folders are named 2009-09-14, 2009-09-23, 2009-10-07 and so on, using the date when I do them as the folder name. You just mention one folder name, which might mean you only have the one backup of your current status, which is not a good idea - copying your current status over the top of a backup might mean you copy a dud set over and replace/overwrite a good set.

I now find that selecting POI near you or, POI near Home has 4 icons: Search. Petrol Station. Eug and an Arrow indicating next screen. Selecting the Arrow shows POI category (for inputting characters), Eug and Airport with down arrow to show the rest in Alpha-numeric sequence.
That's how it works.

After selecting POI near you, the screen gives you the option of Searching ALL the categories for a specific locations name. It will also show the 3 most used categories, plus the last one used.

If you select the Arrow the next screen is for searching for a particular category.

So Eug is there but not in the Point of Interest screen, like Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Is this anything to with the TomTom.mnu file?
Which Points of Interest screen? Confused

Liverpool John Lennon Airport is a location, not a POI Category. If I am thinking of the screen you mean (the one with POI near you, POI in city, etc) it has 5 search POI options, plus the last POI location you searched for previously.

The TomTom.mnu file has no bearing in how these sub-menus are presented.

It is exactly where it should be, namely somewhere below the level of Navigate to - a few more clicks. It is a POI, so it will show up as one of those, either POI Near You, POI Near destination, or Along Route or Something Else - you just have to move down through the layers of menus to get to it.

You MAY find that once you have done a Navigate to one, the EUG category may move up in the menu listing - on some devices, it has an intelligent memory which remembers the latest category to which you navigated, saving you an extra screen click (that's why John Lennon Airport is showing as one).

This extra clicking is why TomTom have the Favourites, much quicker to get to them. But the Favorites are often lost when you do a map upgrade, whereas POIs are not.

So you have the choice of using this method of several clicks to reach the Eug Category, or if you wish, you can use them to recreate your Favourites list. Our advice is to have them as POIs, but you can ignore that advice if you want them in your TomTom Favourites. If you wish, we can tell you how to put the Eug items into Favourites.

You are still shying away from telling us what method you use for doing backups. Do you use Windows Explorer to copy and paste the entire contents of your device/SD card to a separate folder on your PC? If you don't, then I wish you luck in the future that you'll never regret not doing so. If you don't know how to do it using Windows Explorer and wish to take our advice, just say so and we'll tell you how.
