Chaps

Not sure how to term this so hoping the title will say it all - my 720 mount has for a while been 'loose' and by that I mean that after about 10 minutes on the mount, the weight of the TT will actually cause the joint to move, thus succumbing to the forces of gravity, so the unit ends up pointing more downwards than into the car. So, the viscosity of the ball joint on the mount is not strong enough to support the weight of the unit.

Anyone any bright tips on how to resolve this before I try. My thoughts will be sticking it in a freezer for a while and maybe one or two other things. No point in buying a new mount as it's not that worrying, but just wondered if there are any tricks. Or indeed if there is a better way to explain it as I'm struggling with this one...

Thanks

Andy

Hi mightyyid, I get this also and find that theTT's droop gets quicker as the temperature rises. Not very technical but my "Bodge" is to wedge a bit of something (normally paper or cloth, folded over several times) between it and the dash-board. This has the added advantage of also taking the weight of the unit and stops the suction to the windscreen failing as often as it normally does and If I use a bit of black cloth, it stops a lot of the reflection in the TT screen.

Thanks - hot climates do not seem to help. I'm going to try a few things such as sticking it in the freezer overnight and seeing what happens...

Will advise if anythng does...

Have a look at the TomTom web site, they make a new type of mount for the x20/ x30 devices known as the "Easy Port" it might be worth considering changing to one of these, I would also talk to Customer Support as the mount shouldn't be going soft in this way - Mike

Hi mightyyid
I purchased an alternative mount for my 720 shortly after getting my device. The original mount has only been used twice. If you let me have your address I will pop the original into a jiffy bag and post it to you. No charge. It will be my good deed for the year.

Well, that is just rude.

Not a problem and many thanks for the offer. It's certainly not worth it, but you can send it to my parents in the UK!

More so, I suspect this must be happening to other units so I am hoping for a quick fix that sorts this and will keep trying. Freezer the first attempt - to be tried tonight.

Cheers again fella...

I took mikealder's advice and e-mailed TomTom Support with my "Challenge". I shall let you know of any progress.

Thanks - let me know how it goes as I'd be interested if they care enough to worry about it. It's one of those annoying things that you want to chnage but at no cost...

Hi mightyyid
If you leave your parents address in my messages I will post the mount to them. It may come in handy for you and it will leave me looking a less of a Scrooge than it first appeared.
Ba! Humbug.

I recieved an e-mail from TTSupport yesterday (10/10 for the very quick & positive response) asking to see proof of purchase. I shall send that off to them today and see what happens.

Thanks for that. being in Australia makes things harder but having looked at my mount now, and not sure why I have not noticed this before, but it actually has to small chunks out of the plastic where the ball joint is. Given the location it's not as if dropping could do it, and it's fairly thick plastic so I suspect it could be due to heat or something - after all, what does the mount do other than stick to the window.

Anyhow, I tried the freezer trick. Some trick - held it in place for a while until the temp rose and then dropped again.

So I'll get another one from somewhere and get it sorted. I suspect TT will not case given the age of my 720 and with the chunks missing have a perfect get out clause.

Thanks

My 720 mount disintegrated in the same way. Started as small hairline cracks and then chunks of plastic missing; I contacted TomTom and they asked me to attch a copy of my purchase receipt to an email. They sent me a new mount by return. Could be worth atry, espacially if your receipt, like mine, is very feint. I doubt if they could have read the purchase date.

Same thing happened to mine.
I sent them these pics and they sent a replacement, no questions asked.
