I have worked out why my Navigate To/ Contacts didn't work, it is down to the format the address is entered

This is a made up address but it will illustrate the difference, this one doesn't work:

321 Preston New Road
Blackpool
Lancashire
UK
FY41HJ

This version does work:

321
Preston New Road
Blackpool
Lancashire
UK
FY41HJ

Putting the house number on a seperate line to the street name seems to get it working, that said Navigon and CoPilot work with my address book as it is, I have little inclination to modify it all just so the TT application can use it.

To be honest I doubt this application will get much use at all, after trying it for a few days its not upto the standards the others offer at all, yes it works, but thats about all - I have had it refuse to plan a long route it simply returns back to the nav screen, far from impressed - Mike

[quote="classy56" quick at re calculating the route, no dropping of sats, really pleased so far.

Yes, I'm also very pleased with performance. On my 3GS it is quicker than my TT940 at calculating the route, quicker to start up, and quicker to get satellite lock.

TomTom for iPhone can't possibly be the finished article. It must have been rushed out incomplete in response to Copilot and the other readily available TBT apps hoovering up punters. It couldn't be more obvious. As usual, TomTom are using us as beta testers. We can only hope V2 is more like it.

Anyone looked at their micro-site? Not impressed with the Q&A? Responses to questions about updates etc are typical TomTom marketing speak 'committed to ensuring map upgrades are cost effective' 'the very latest mapping' etc (my paraphrasing) - we don't learn anything we didn't already expect. Still stuck at 'Grade C - must try harder'.

the issue i have with the tomtom app is what it COULD have been. as a so-called market leader i was expecting text-to-speech, live search, custom poi's - ya know, things that would have 'lead the market' - but instead we have just another sat nav app for the iphone... and an expensive one at that!

And I think that's the problem MaFt, it's not the TomTom App, it was peoples expectations of it!

I'm sure as updates come and go, the things you wanted will be added at some point, I don't think any TomTom PND owner will be 100% satisfied with the Iphone app, because of the simple fact we have been spoilt by all the goodies we get with the PND.

If you look in the PND section, the things you want included are some of the things that are complained most about....not working....faulty etc, so why would you want them on your Iphone?

As with other TomTom products though, it will always be the same, they are like Marmite, you either love em or hate em. Wink

Just use a PC application such as DiskAid to copy the files from the PC to the UK&ROI or Western Europe folder as applicable.

Be aware all you will get is the icon displayed on the map in the correct location there is no POI warning capability within the TomTom application so you cannot set warnings, Sygic is the best application for iPhone with respect to custom POI files as it fully supports the warnings and optional ogg warning voice files we supply - Mike

I used TomTom for the first time at the weekend to drive in the centre of Newcastle, somewhere I am not familiar with at all. I found the directions given to be precise and easy to follow and the app got me to where I wanted to be with no problem at all. I was very happy with its performance.

I used TT for iPhone for the first time this weekend (Have I been mugged?)

PROS: Screen display quality is very good; familiar features are still there, some improved; GPS lock is good as my phone is in holder at windscreen level on dashboard; with an FM transmitter the voice sounds good over the car stereo.

CONS: It's no better than TT6 for PDA as far as maps go, amendments I reported years ago are still not made in this version; the camera database is woefully inadequate; no custom POIs (i.e. PGPSW cameras); no lane assist; no LIVE services; no signpost display.

I read reviews here and still bought it, I suppose I'm expecting (hoping) TT will improve on it and eventually it will become the no.1 application, hopefully not at the expense of loyal users.

I would imagine, like me, TT Nav 6 users who now own iPhones have been waiting for this moment.

Are we to be shafted again?

I sincerely hope not.

PS: The PROS and CONS are what I've thought of so far, there may be more to surface / resurface. I reserve the right to edit as warranted Wink

The TT micro-site does at least give hope of future app updates:

14. When will an update of the existing app become available? And what will be included?

It is our intention to release new versions of the TomTom for iPhone app frequently. Please make sure you register at iphone.tomtom.com to be kept up to date with the latest news on upcoming releases.

I installed W Europe on my iPhone and can't get it do anything useful in walking mode. Car routes work great, but on foot it never seems to be updating location, despite satellite reception. Any ideas?

@Mikealder

What are the roads like for St Annes on the iPhone version?

On my 720 most roads in St Annes have all but disappeared on the new PND maps and are now lumped under Lytham St Annes.

I live on Heeley Road and I have now been 'moved' to Lytham as there are now only 23 roads here now!!

I ask Mike as he's local but if anyone else looks in first I'm not picky!

The TomTom App for the iPhone has only 20 roads listed in St Annes, all the others (including yours) are in Lytham according to the device - perhaps they are trying to tell you something? - Mike

Yet another disappointed reply from someone who bought TomTom - it's significantly worse than my Windows Mobile version! This could have been the killer app, but TomTom have cocked up so badly. Don't they understand they could have sold millions of copies? Are they really so badly run as to believe only their standalone devices are the future? They're going to go the way of so many companies before them that didn't understand the market.

I must be particularly dumb as I can't find the config menu, other than a menu to route! Embarassed

Anyway, I suspect CoPilot is next on my iTunes purchase list Sad
