I was interested to see that when PGPSW suggested that they may charge for the toilets database at some time in the future, the response was overwhelming, toilets were suddenly the "In" thing.
Similarly and I'm not sure why, Post Offices multiplied like rabbits overnight.
The majority of subscribers to this site do so because they want to be safer drivers. I know that Liz certainly reminds me to watch my speed sometimes.
With a view to making our roads even safer, could I ask all of you to start submitting "School" POI please? (Sorry Oldboy!)
I use a spoken warning within 500 yards of a school irrespective of route.
If we all do this and it stops one child being killed or seriously injured, then it will have been worth the effort. _________________ TT Go 720 (T)

I thought the same thing and have already submitted a file of schools in my area (Thurrock).
I think they may be at the bottom of the pile as I have not yest seen any entries in the School POI database.

Maybe someone went to the Post Office website, dumped their entire database, and put the "postcode" for the location ;) Not perfect, as we all know postcodes are only good enough to be approximate, but at least they are in the right area, and allow people to "tweak" them from their own personal knowledge.

I dont know the specifics, but if I remember right someone did provide the Post Office poi which was based on post codes.
I think they were initially just added on top of the ones already listed which caused a lot of double postings.
it's been sorted now I think, and yes I do tweak them when I find one out of whack.
Schools poi is a good idea, but will be a lot of work to get it accurate. _________________ Triumph Tbird 1700. And now a Bonnie T100.

Some children can walk a mile to school so 500 yards?
The biggest danger is parents on the school run, if they are running late they have a complete disregard for others, they all tend to park in the most awkward places, causing a danger to others children as well as their own. Some often park on the zig-zags either side of the entrance.
I live next to a school and although the road is straight, downhill, to the end of the school grounds it then goes into a fairly tight left bend and the parents park all along the road.
Mummy or daddy let the school aged child out, 5 years up to 11, and let them run free while they take the baby out of what would be the nearside, if they parked the right way round, and I've seen many a near miss where the car door, mother or mother and baby have nearly been caught by a car coming round the bend, with a car coming in the opposite direction, and whose vision has been obscured by some really bad parking.
Ban all parking, dropping off/picking up at least half a mile either side of the schools half an hour either side of start/finish times, this will make the children safer as they will be seen. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

I think 500 yards is a fair estimate, obviously the closer to the school that they are, then the more concentrated they will be. When you have groups of kids together, you get them being a bit boisterous and a lot of horseplay happening, which is when accidents have more chance of happening.
The ones that have to walk a mile are going to be too knackered to do more than simply stay on the pavement!
Anyway, this could open up a whole new debate about the school run, women drivers, Chelsea tractors etc. etc.

I can give you the coordinates of a number of schools around my area.
Not being awkward but would you prefer the coordinates of the main entrance to the school, or both where there are more than one.
e.g. The school grounds next to me has a total length of 418 yards. One entrance being 90 yards up the road from me, a second 10 yards further along (one for the juniors and one for the infants) then continues a further 318 yards up the hill.
A further 253 yards brings you to one of two entrances to a Grammar/Secondary school. The other entrance being 850 yards 'around the block'. Just to add to any confusion, the first (secondary) entrance is on the main A2 which is dual carriageway past the school, the second (main, vehicular) access is in a cul-de-sac.
863 yards around the block in the opposite direction from my house is another Grammar school with one main entrance. This is not usually a busy road except during the school run.

I suppose on a huge building like this, we can afford to put one at each corner.
Is this OK with Oldboy / Oldie?
Or should we put only one at the main entrance, so that we can guide all of the "school run" cars to the correct place?

Tom59, to give you an idea of the schools I mentioned, Open Google Earth and enter 51.370750 - 0.596603, which will put you at the centre of the first complex.
To the east you'll see the main vehicular access to Thames View Infants and Junior Schools from Bloors lane.
To the west is the main vehicular access to Rainham Mark Grammar School from Pump Lane.
Enter 51.363497 - 0.592905 and you'll get the centre of The Howard Grammar/Secondary and Rainham Girls Comprehensive Schools.
Follow the path up (NE) where the entrance is via a footbridge from either side of the A2.
The main entrance is in Derwent Way. (Just below the schools car parks).
To use the POI's as you mentioned in your first post, i.e. safety of children, where would we have the POI's for the above schools? _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

Hello Lost_Property, You confused me for a moment as your co-ordinates took me to a farm near Woking! I tried without the - sign and found your schools.
I don't see why this scenario should cause such a problem? Looks to me like we are discussing four schools, so I would suggest marking the entrance to each individual school.
I see where you are coming from with the 500 yard distance. I suggest that we increase to 1000 or even 1500, or whatever people personally feel that they need.
I am not 100% sure of exactly which buildings you are referring to. If you can post accurate co-ordinates for each entrance, I will willingly submit them. _________________ TT Go 720 (T)

The first idea of the Schools POI was for vehicular access, as are most POIs. I think that we might be able to accommodate both scenarios here. One for car access and one for foot access.
I can envisage the first being as it is now, and the Title for the second would read something like "Rainham, Girls Comprehensive, foot access".
If the extra text is not included it would be assumed it is for vehicles.
I'll have to seek guidance on this as I don't want to create a new category due to the duplication that will ensue.

I think, as noted above that we need both (if we're going for a dual purpose POI). Children still use the vehicle access roads, for any number of reasons. _________________ Richard
