Question I am considering going for this model as i need a waterproof unit but, cannot find on Garmin's website if the unit has post code search in the UK. The Navman one does but not sure if waterproof so could someone tell me the answer and how well it works?
Thanks terry

Hi,

Firstly, I don't think this unit is waterproof like the older StreetPilot III was, you should check this with Garmin if you are going to buy one.

If you get a Navman or PDA then you may be able to get a waterproof box like the ones from Otter (or a plastic bag!).

Garmin don't do postcode lookup as such but it does have postcodes for the streets you lookup. For example, if you are looking for "High Street", you can search for High Street, BR1, BROMLEY or High Street, CR0, CROYDON.

You can't search for a post code like SW1A 1AA and have it tell you the address and location though.

Watch out for Garmin's map pricing, they are expensive and you can only use Garmin's maps on their GPS units. You can't scan your own maps or anything like that so if they don't have a map for the area you want (like OS maps) then you are out of luck. Also beware of buying a USA model GPS because you have to buy the UK maps for it (may still be cheaper than buying one in the UK though).

A pocket PC based system is probably better, cheaper and more flexible, however Garmin are a purpose built unit and pretty reliable - you don't have to muck about with tweaking your software drivers or operating system.

Good luck!

The Navman iCN620/630 isn't waterproof, the easy way to tell is where the SD card slots in, this will easily let in water and I wouldn't suggest using this say on a bike unles it's in a waterproof container.

Garmin don't actually lay claims to the IPX7/Waterproofness in their specs for the SPIII Deluxe/2610/2620/2650 but they do claim it is "fully gasketed" so I think the SP2610/2620/2650 should be okay.
