I've had my eTrex Vista HCx for 3 weeks and the unit locks up intermittently
outdoors under no particular condition or function. Today, it froze 3 times
in two hours for no apparent reason. I've got the latest software version
(2.8) installed, plenty of battery power (lithium), and I handle the unit
very carefully. The only way to "un-freeze" the unit is to power down, then
power back up. Is this normal -- something everyone experiences -- or is
this a reason for an exchange from Garmin?

From a Garmin Newsgroup.

It's not only SatMap who have/had problems.

It's in response to the posts knocking Satmap. Anyone complaining about Satmap ought to take a look at the Oregon post with the OS Map screen-shots, dire is being polite!

Hi,

I have had to send my brand new Active 10 back to Satmap for exchange or "tuning" because of 20 minute satelite lock times. Although this is annoying don't let anyone tell you that Satmap is any worse than other manufacturers.

My experiences over the last year.

Garmain Vista HCx
Kept turning itself off at random. Trip log useless - After a 10 mile hike it only showed 5 miles or less. This was caused by the unit thinking you were stationary if moving at less than 2mph. Both of these faults have now been fixed by software updates but it look several months.

Garmin Oregon 300
I decided to purchase this instead of the Active 10. What a mistake. The screen is extremely difficult to read in any sort of sunlight even with the backlight on full. It is no exageration to say the the Satmap set to 20% brightness is far easier to read than the Garmin Oregon at 100%. In fact the readability is so bad that the supplier gave me a refund as he assumed it must be faulty. I just don't know how this unit got to be on sale. - and this comes from a self confessed Garmin Fanboy!

TomTom 520
This worked well until I bought a new map and upgraded the software. Unfortuneately the new software is almost unuseable and the new maps will not work with the old software. TomTom are aware of the problem but seem incapable of fixing it. In fact if it wasn't for the help I have had on these forums I would have chucked it in the bin by now.

Even though I received a faulty unit I have found Satmap very helpfull and I am willing to give them a chance. Most if not all the reported problems appear to have been fixed by the latest software update.
