Been a long time since I posted anything as I've been busying myself on new equipment ranges.

I'm currently working in Saudi and have a need for a PC mapping apllication to work on rugged PC's which will have an in built gps engine.

I just need to show where the vehicle is on a map. No fancy stuff, no navigation just a moving map showing the position of the GPS on a street level map.

Which comes to the second part. I also need a source of good street level mapping of Saudi.

Anybody help?

Appreciate any pointers.

You might want to take a look at Open Street Map which is a free to use electronic map of the world, some areas have very good definition other might not show any detail at all. The big plus point is you can also add to the map or edit the data where it is wrong, the whole setup is easy to use now they have some decent help guides, what PC are you using a grid? - Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the info but the application seems to be web based as as such it wouldnt work too well in a vehicle, particularly in ME as the off road GPRS coverage is not good. I'll bear it in mind if I need something for Europe as it looks pretty good.

I'm using a microbus rugged PC.

I looked at Garmin products but cannot find an application where I can use my own maps.

I'll keep looking.

Take a look at Oziexplorer. It was designed, originally, for off-roading in Australia - so it should be perfect for this application. You scan (and calibrate) your own map images. You will need three good position fixes on the map (pref towards the corners) to get accurate calibration - but it certainly works very well.
