Hi and welcome.

Your question is a bit like "What is a good car". Please be more specific - your driving habits, the vehicle you want to use it in, the PocketPC hardware etc. Give us the details and we can give you some advice.

Hi,

It also helps if we know your location, as that can have a major influence on the recommendation for “best” software. Wink

Can you please update your profile to indicate which country you’re based in and a region? Thumbs Up

Regards,

Hi,
Many thanks to the two of you for your reply. I'm based in Essex, UK. I am starting off my own mobile locksmithing business and will be working around Essex, London and maybe even further afield at some stage. I'll be leasing a new van but haven't decided on the exact model yet.

I have seen on Ebay there are TomTom3's for sale going for around the GBP 420 mark. As you may have already guessed i'm not a hi-tech whizz when it comes to electronic gadgets so i'm looking for something fairly simple but very effective.

Again i will very much appreciate your time in a response.

Are you expecting to serve multiple customers on the same trip, and do you care about route optimisation for that?

That was a very fast reply Lutz!

It will be one customer at a time most likely. I'm just looking for something that i can plug into my cigarette lighter and go. I want voice directions and the 3D animation looks good too. I will also want to probably take it out of my vehicle in the evening or at some parts of the day (just for security reasons really)

Regards,
Adam

Ah, the 3D animation looks good... Shouldn't you rather keep your eyes on the road?

Just kidding (kind of). Anyhow, TomTom is probably a good choice for you. You can even select between a PocketPC based version, a Palm version, or even a standalone all-in-one (the TomTom Go device, also based on the Palm version) .

All of them allow easy removal after you finished your trip. You will need additional hardware if you go for the PocketPC/Palm solution. You need the PDA, the GPS receiver, and the car mount. Check the bundle offerings that contain all the items.

Lutz,

Maybe the 3D will brighten up my day a bit!

How about TomTom Bluetooth Navigator III with iPAQ 1940? Seen this on
http://www.totalpda.co.uk/TomTom-Bluetooth-Navigator-III-with-iPAQ-1940.aspx for £329 exl vat. Would i need any extra software with that?

Again i appreciate your time and help!

The software is fine but check their recommendations

Recommendations
- 128MB SD or CF Card for Map Storage
- TomTom CarKit

I would rather go for a 256 MB card, but yes, you need both a storage card and a car mount to complete the package.

Adam,

If you go the TomTom Navigator route then another essential piece of software that would be of benefit to you is “UK Postcode” written by Niels Thomsen. It is a great add-on for TomTom Navigator and allows routing by full UK Postcode. Best of all, it’s absolutely free. Well recommended! Thumbs Up

Regards,

I am in a siilar situation, but already have a Palm T3. I need some navigation software.

I travel the west from Birmingham to Devon, towns, cities and villages. I therfore need something with detailed maps, including all roads, and a good address finder - am I right in thinking that there is no postcode search available for Palm OS?

I have seen TT navigator in action with an Ipaq and was impressed. Having used a Palm 505 with TT routeplanner I was decidedly not - fine to get you from one major city to another - but its hard to get lost on a motorway. Little use therafter. The display was also very poor.

I am thinking that its a toss up between TT Navigator 3, or the Navman 4460. But I am a. put off by the price, and B. starting to be very wary of bluetooth GPS which negates the Navman (I think. - do they do a hard wired sollution?).

So - in short do I go for a TT Navigator 3 or Navman 4460, or something else altogether?

Many thanks in advance for your responses.

Have a look at Mapopolis - their Palm version is pretty cool.

If you're interested, I've just bought an ipaq2210 + wired TT3, and I think it's fantastic. (Helped somewhat by being a bit of a bargin - but that's another story.....OK £254 all in! (bar memory card)) :P

What's this 'UK Postcode' & how do I get it?

Mike

That is the 'ukpostcode' program which is an add-on for TomTom Navigator 2/3 running on PocketPC under Windows Mobile 2003 written by Niels Thomsen.
