I have just bought a Garmin Colorado 300
I have CityNavigator Europe v9 and TOPO GB v2 operating on the unit.

The new Colorado has an in-built facility for taking Screenshots.
I will add new screenshots to this posting over time.

Unit Software Upgrade.
The current versions [2.40] [2.51] make substantial changes to the unit.

.

Maps on Unit.

.
.
Left images - View with the built in Active BaseMap
[needs to be de-selected for viewing Metroguide to make the map clearer]

Right Images - CityNavigator v9 with BaseMap de-activated.

....

....

The same roundabout but the Colorado is in Automotive Mode [Track up]
.
.
....

Speed Cameras on the Unit.
Please note that there are no facilities for audible or visual proximity warnings as yet, so it is of limited value for the Speed Camera Database!! Evil or Very Mad

The 'consolidated' database icons on the left [24 x 24 size icons].
The 'zonned' database on the right [24 x 24 size icons].
Thanks to GerryC:-

Some Screenshots of Shortcuts and Options

....

....

Comparison 60CSX - on the left and Colorado 300 - on the right

The 60CSX has the most expensive CityNavigator Europe v9 and the Colorado has the cheap MetroGuide Europe v9, each zoomed to 800ft.

The 60CSX has the screenshot taken with xImage and the Colorado with in-built screenshot software.

....

Accuracy of Signal
I enclose a screenshot of my Colorado taken while the unit was on the passenger seat [the cradle is not available from Garmin yet]

Garmin TOPO GB

With just the TOPO selected:-

...

With TOPO and CityNavigator selected [you lose the contour lines but gain 'relief' mapping]

I have added new images.
The main disadvantage with the Colorado at present [for me] is the lack of visual and audible proximity alerts for the Speed Cameras.

That makes a nice question to ask Garmin in 45 minutes when the Outdoors Show opens, I will post their response later - Mike

Well I asked the question earlier at the Outdoors show and Garmin’s answer was somewhat surprising:

Q "Can the Colorado accept Custom POI files"

A "No I don't think so from what we have tried"

Q "So will it take Speed Camera database files and use them"

A "No, we tried to install the Speed Camera database last week and it doesn't work on this device"

Q " Which Speed Camera Database did you try, was it Cyclops or something else"

A "It was the one from the Pocket GPS World Web site and it simply didn't work.

At this point I used the mobile phone to display this thread with the pictures Phil had posted to point out that it clearly can be loaded, unfortunately there is no POI Proximity Warning within the software (from what they said) which I find rather surprising for such a high end device.

Further attempts to get answers from other staff on the stand were some what difficult due to them choosing to be rather busy when we returned - Mike

You are getting longer times than me with 2500mAh NiMh batteries. I get about 2/3rds of your times. Are your batteries 'run-in'? I ask as mine are brand new (couple of charge/discharge cycles).

The batteries are new but have been charged a few times.
I leave the unit on with full backlight until I get the Red warning light.
I set the Unit trip computer to record the results.
The unit is left [after returning from a visit] in my windowless office so it is fighting for a 'fix' [satelite not drugs]

I am surprised at the lack of 'drift' [movement] when the unit was left for the duration of a battery in the office!

I have found the biggest draw on battery life is the Automotive Mode and track up!!

Yes - I've come to the conclusion that track-up is a battery hog - it will be the constant recalculation and redrawing of the map image that does that. I now have it set for North up.

I will run some tests with it over the easter week-end - it will get the batteries charged/discharged a bit more!

When you connect the unit to the Computer it becomes a 'drive'!
Even the internal memory is available!

Backup the Colorado as you would any other work on your computer as a fellow owner on another website, from Scotland, deleted items.

You could lose the Basemap and all your tracks, waypoints and routes!

Backup!!!! Very Happy

A static battery test.
Notice the lack of drift [56feet].

Dear All,

Having terrible trouble with the Colorado 300 (UK). I am trying to transfer Topo UK V2 I have converted to Mac. The Mapinstall program does it's thing and then tells me the transfer will take over 400 hours, I am a patient man but … ! Has anybody else seen this problem. I have emailed Garmin but am waiting for a reply.

Regards

Dave Hage

The Map Indexing/building done on the PC takes up to 60 minutes for the whole of the TOPO GB.

The transfer from PC to the SD card takes about 10 to 15 minutes depending on the card and card reader! Never use the unit.

So about 75 minutes for the whole of the TOPO GB onto a 2GB card.

The Colorado 300 UK.

The work to fill my 2GB SD card is dependant on the Software:-

Stage one - on the PC [building and indexing].
1-MetroGuide or Topo with small maptiles takes far longer than CityNavigator with big maptiles.
2-The time taken is dependent on the PC's capability not the SD card.

Stage two the transfer of the file is dependent on whether:-
1-You use the unit
2-A card reader

2GB Card 1.8GB of maps
So on my old PC it took three hours for stage one with MetroGuide.
On my new PC 65 minutes.
On my new PC CityNavigator 55 minutes.

The transfer to the SD card takes no more than 30 minutes whatever maps I transfer by card reader!

Just an update. I have now 'run-in' the rechargeables and seem to be getting 10.5-11.5 hrs with the 2800mAH. This is much more acceptable as a spare set of batteries will ensure I get a good days walk out of the unit.
