Hi all,

I'm thinking of purchasing the royaltek rtb3000 datalogging device and a Pocket PC.

Before I do is there any software for the Pocket PC so that I can download the data and overlay onto a map image.

I require this as I will be away from a computer for a week.

Cheers

All the software comes with the RoyalTek on the CD. You will get both a PC and Pocket PC version of their Blue application that allows you to configure the datalogger and also download, erase the datalogs from the memory of the RBT3000.

You can then play back your route into any GPS application providing it can receive data on the COM port. If you are using a Pocket PC I find the iPAQ 2210 uses COM 7.

Does Fugawi or Memory Map ?

Both Fugawi and Memory-Map can coonect on COM7 for playback. The Datalogger app works superbly and it's excellent playing back your tracks in realtime whilst sat on the sofa!

Excellent, thank you for the advice.

Its good to know before buying than to find out later that it doesn't work.

In general how would you compare the Royaltek to other Bluetooth GPS devices on a day to day basis ?

I still use the TomTom BT GPS on a daily basis purely because this is hard wired in via the cradle. However I use the Royaltek BT GPS frequently, whenever I am not in my own car or whenever I need a tracklog. It has excellent signal sensitivity and a good battery.

The only minus point is it has a non-standard power socket which means I have to carry the Royaltek charger cable, many others use the standard iPAQ socket whcih means one PSU normally suffices for all but it is a very minior criticism!

How does hard wiring in your Bluetooth GPS work?

Do you leave the gps permanently on but it only works when your start your engine ?

Does this constitute one charge cycle thus rendering it useless after approx 6months ?

The TomTom BT GPS ahs a seperate cradle that you can hard wire in if you choose to do so. The advantages of this are that it is always fully charged and when cradled it turns on/off with the ignition. It can be removed easily for use in another location or on foot if you wish.

You raise a good question about the charge cycle/battery life. Only time will tell I guess but mine still holds a full charge having been used in-car daily for 5 months or so. When on battery I can still get 6hrs out of it.

I have used the datalogger software successfully on my 2210 to playback routes in TomTom and Memory-Map. Both apps accepted COM7 (which the datalogger software creates) as the source and played back the route happily convinced that they were receiving realtime data Smile
