Apart from the obvious back ups etc what else should I do?

1) Load pocketworlds speed cam database?
2) Load a Custom cursor and splash screen.
3) Spoken POIs?
4..
5..

What else am I missing please?

I will be using the FM TMC and the MP3 player if that helps.

Thanks, Scott.

Join MapShare.
See if there's a map update.

1. In addition to the normal backup procedure, back up the "map name.meta.dct" file seperately and store it someplace extra safe (burn to CD?)

2. Find a radio frequency that isn't in use in your area so you won't have much interference with the FM transmitter for mp3's, etc.

3. Copy the mapsettings.cfg file from you old TomTom to the new one so you don't lose your favorites, home, etc.

4. Set your MapShare preferences, and familiarize yourself with how it works by fixing whatever map inaccuracies are in your local area.

Do the UN-OBVIOUS backups! Laughing

Not as silly as it sounds... In case you hadn't spotted it, we always suggest here that you do your backups with Windows Explorer rather than TomTom's "Home" utility.
Instructions are #1 in the TomTom FAQs HERE

Other things I can think of...
Have a look at the various voice alerts available for the cameras
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtom-ogg-files.php

If you are going to play mp3s using the FM, buy a 2 or 4GB SD card to put them on.

Go through your mp3s with an audio editor ("Audacity" is the best free one) and "normalise" the volume of them all to 100%. Otherwise you are likely to find them all much too quiet.

Look into a new Splashscreen for when it switches on (make your own or download one from this forum HERE.

Check out POI Edit, a great utility for viewing the contents of POI files and merging them together.

Maybe a new map colour? I think GB New is better than any of the built-in schemes...
http://www.colorschemeeditor.com/index.php?p=home&lang=EN

You might want a couple of games (Happy Lines and Robo) for the TT from http://www.satnavvoices.com./

Read all the forums! Smile

...and then do ANOTHER backup Laughing

1. Jot down the phone numbers for TT support - you'll need it when it breaks down.
2. Stock up on Brandy and Valium to get you through the many phone calls you will have to make to TT to get it repaired/replaced
3. Buy a 910 to use when the 720 is away being repaired.

Forget the phone numbers for TT. Put Pocketgpsworld.com on your Bookmarks Toolbar and ALWAYS go there first.

I couldn't agree more, Dennis.

You don't realise how much you've learnt from these forums until you speak to someone with a satnav who doesn't regularly visit them.

How true - I met a guy last week who's been fuming and cursing because he puts the letter o into postcodes instead of the number 0 and is furious that the thing won't ever guide him to the right destination! Wink

Mind you, not that Anita is one to take notice of - she's the only person in the world with a working GO720, with working Mapshare, working app v7.210, working Latest Map Guarantee and free new maps for the GO920 which hasn't even been released yet. Rolling Eyes

You need to have TomTom Home 2 installed on your PC.

On your Go 720 go to "Change Preferences", "Manage Maps", "Download Free Map Corrections" , and select the type of corrections you want.

Having already installed Home, put your Go 720 in it's desktop cradle and turn it on, select connect to PC, Home 2 will start, click on Preferences, move the cursor down to MapShare, then select POI Categories and you will get a list of the MapShare POI's (if I remember correctly they are all selected by default) just leave the ones you want ticked and untick the ones you don't want. Click on Done.

The next time you connect your Go 720 to home it should start downloading the MapShare corrections you have selected.

Laughing

Maybe, as it was a prize donated by and sent direct from TomTom, it was an extra special one which, unlike the retail models, was designed to actually work! Confused

I can't remember if this actually does the same thing as XDA's instructions, but you might also need to join Mapshare first by opening Home (with your TT connected) going to "Preferences" / "TomTom Mapshare"/ "How to join".

Also if you intend to use with a mobile phone make sure that feature works properly.

If not the 910 you bought as a backup will while your new one is away.

All seems to be working so far....even TMC over FM...kind of. It told me there was a jam on the M4 just as I arrived at it.

Haven't tried the RDS TT traffic yet as I need to put the DUN file on my wifes XDA..

And I'm not sure about subscribing to Mapshare when I here people are closing the A40???!! That is WORRYING....

Thanks for all your help so far.

The FM transmitter is a bit crappy but I didnt really play with it much yet so that's not conclusive. I'm not that bothered as I will eventually hard wire it.
