The father-in-law has an iCN510 (about 2-3 years old) which has always worked Ok. He's just bought a new Peugeot 306SW, but is now having problems with his Navman due to the coated windscreen.

I've looked into the external aerial but just wondered if anyone has used it and if it solves the problem. Also, he'll be a bit reluctant to make any alterations to his shiny new car, so I wondered how it fits and if its easy to hide the cable. Am I right in thinking it needs to be placed near the beesting aerial, with the cable hidden under the roof lining all the way to the front (behind the dashboard)? Any tips on how easy this is?

Also, I doubt if he's ever updated the software - does he need to?

Thanks folks.

I suffer the same problem with my Renault Megane and my Garmin i3. Behind my rear view mirror is a dotted section where there is no coating. By routing an antenna round the window and onto the top of the rear view mirror (double sided sticky tape holds it in place) i get great signal without having to route it externally or drill holes anywhere. The roof lining only needs a gentle pull to slip the cable behind it.

If you want / need it on the roof then there should be no reason you can't route it out of the door when need in a similar fashion to cabby's and their aerials.

edit - removed link to incorrect antenna type.

Hi,
PaulB2005 is right about the placement but double check as I think you need the mini MMCX antenna for the icn520.
I could be wrong though - hence double check.

You're right - serves me right for trusting one source for info.

It is the mini MCX or mMCX antenna you need. Page 93 of the manual.

This One Is under £20 with the dreaded VAT applied so they can be found, if you live in the North West they have a trade counter in Preston near J32 of the M6 so you could save on postage to - Mike

My external aerial is a small rectangular one with a sticky pad which I have stuck on the little cill by the small side window by the parcel shelf on our Picasso. The wire is routed behind the door rubbers and up to the dashboard where the iCN520 fits nicely on the front driver's side window. It is easier to read there than on the windscreen, which is quite a long way away on the Picasso and it also solves the problem of the satnav obscuring the wiper's swept area.
