Garmin 2610 - problem uploading routes, please help

I have a 2610, bought 1 month ago which has a problem uploading to my PC.

The PC can find the device, connect and upload / download waypoints, tracks, maps, without errors. When I upload routes the file transfer gets to approx 80% complete and then I get a dialog box saying that there has been a communications error and the comms stops, so I can never upload routes from the device.

I have emailed and phoned Garmin technical help - all they will say is update the USB drivers. I have done this and it makes no difference (with the latest drivers off the Garmin website). They are still saying update the USB drivers and my patience with them is wearing a bit thin.

In every other respect (that I am aware of) the unit works fine.

I am running software V4.80 from the Garmin website uploaded a week after I got the device. I am not sure if this may have introduced the problem as I don't remember seeing it during my first week of ownership, but this is my first satnav and it may be a red herring as the whole thing is pretty new to me. I do not see old operating systems on the Garmin website so cannot revert - does anyone have a copy of an older operating system that I could download and try?

Any ideas would be gratefully received.
