Aha! that makes sense except ............ the Mio C520T aerial is about 4-5 feet long (yes, really) so having it run just vertically would have it running up to the roof and back over my head hence I have run it across the dash to the passenger side (so it doesn't interfere with my vision) and then the remaining 12-18 inches up the screen pillar
The only way to have it run just vertically would be to shorten it but then as you suggest you run into all sorts of other problems 8O
I don't think there are many vehicles around where you would get a straight run with this particular aerial |

Hopefully, it won't be too long before iTIS announce and introduce the other radio stations being used to carry their TMC signal - Classic FM isn't the easiest of stations to pick up, even with an amplified car aerial.
Edited to ask why this post has adverts in - I didn't put them in (not knowingly, anyway)

Just to back up a previous comment made on here, although a 5 feet long aerial would be a problem as pointed out, I found this on the ViaMichelin site.

.........and yet I ALWAYS had the aerial in a horizontal position ( shorter lead) on my previous Garmin Nuvi and still seemed to pick up as good a signal as anybody else in that forum.
I guess at the end of the day it comes down to what works best in each individual's circumstances. |

A weak signal leaks to earth.
Bearing this in mind my preferred solution is to drill a small hole in the driver's side wing and to lay the shoe string lead suckers around the wheel arch. It works very well.

I am experimenting with some FM booster products. The Velleman kit mentioned in another thread (Rapid Electronics - 70-4092) seems quite good and im also looking at a mains powered (Phillips 6.99 from ASDA!)one which might be easily modified to run of 12V.
Ideally any dedicated PND should really have the amp built in to avoid all these issues as we have all discovered, stringing a piece of wire up the windscreeen is all we want to do and in fact all the manufacturers expect us to do.
The cost of the components are just a few pence and im sure the first supplier to tackle would find a nice gap in the market.
Even something stuck inside one of the mounts! Come on guys (Tomtom, Navman, Michelin et al) this can't be difficult....

Trafficmaster don't have it showing on their system either... |

Results so far indicate that the bit of string normally supplied with a device is unlikely to perform very well.
Using an amplifier does improve things considerably. e.g in Milton keynes the bit of string gives 1 bar while the amp giave 5.
However in Northampton nothing geve me enough signal.
M1 seems ok though for the short time i was on it jct15-13
This is just a sample of the kind of results. Basically untill the overall coverage is better a TMC signal will will at best be patchy.

Which aerial are you using to feed the Velleman amplifier?

It showed up on my Viamichelin as having a contraflow, but no mention of the delays. On Sunday, at one point there were 60min delays south bound. Coming north there were 30min delays on the A90, but no delays on the A8000.
Having delay information certainly would come into its own with the above example if you're heading north. |

Makes sense - but I was a bit wary when only my post appeared to have a GoogleAd in it and it looked like something I'd done rather than a PGPSW project.

It was a mistake on our part, we quickly re-configured it so the ad appeared in its own post to reduce confusion.

It wasn't showing on mine on Saturday morning, didn't really get a chance to check on Sunday as the roadworks were finnished when I was heading back home.

Agreed, if they still have a contract with Trafficlink (www.trafficlink.co.uk) they should have this information available to them. Including it would be a HUGE bonus  |
