Nuvi 350 for walking around Europe?

Hi All,

I'm going to be doing an interailling trip around Europe later this summer and was considering picking up a Nuvi 350 + European Travel Guide before going.
Before I do that I was wondering if people would be able to give some input as to how well the Nuvi works for use when walking around cities.

Along with that I have a few generic questions that someone might be able to answer.

- Is it possible to update the Garmin Travel guide or do you have to repurchase to get new versions.
- Can you use the Nuvi to scroll around a city map or is it purely GPS location on a map only.
- How well does the Nuvi deal with walking directions as opposed to Car. Am I likely to be given directions that can not be completed by foot.

I just purchased the Nuvi 270, which includes both Europe and North America maps preloaded. If the 350 is similar to the 270, it has a setup choice for use in automobile mode, cycling mode, or pedestrian mode. I have not actually used it in pedestrian mode yet.
I don't know the answer regarding the Garmin Travel Guide.

You can simply view a map without having to program a travel route, and you use the touch screen to scroll around, zoom in/out, set favorites, etc. The map has little icons for places of interest, restaurants, etc., and when you touch an icon, a box pops up with the name of the location. Note that the 270 ships only with a car charger (I don't know if that is true of the 350) - I will need to purchase an AC adapter.

We do alot of work around Europe and I use poihandler for European POI's. In my spare time when away the Nuvi has a place in my top pocket. I log where I park the car or where my hotel is and have often wandered cities and then used the Nuvi to re orientate myself of find my way back to my start point or to poi's. The only problem I've found is when in Cities liek London where you are surounded by high rise buildings that can block the stanavs view of satellites. Generally it works very well, but only has a limited battery life. Breakfast time until late at night is a strict no go if you think you can have it on all the time.
You can also use the scrolling map to get others to point out where you want to get to and then navigate there very easily.

Non English speakers soon catch on to what you are showing them and can point out where you want to get to.

If it's just one trip, it might be worth looking at Google Maps. This now runs on your mobile phone and provides walking directions between points.

Obviously there are data charges, but it's not that bad and if it saves buying a satnav at all that's a hefty wodge in the bank.


Won't tell you where you are directly, but is a big step up from a paper based map.
