As a new TTN6 user, I've been fascinated by some of the customisation possibilities which are available. I don't mean preferences within TomTom, but the third-party add-ons, most of which I've found through this forum.

But why is TomTom so inconsistent in the way it interacts with these add-ons ? A well structured application would have a single interface or at least a consistent way of accessing add-ons, but TomTom Navigator 6 is an awful mixture of different methods.

To add custom voices I can simply load new voice files into the existing "voices" folder. Easy to understand, easy to do, and the results show up as an integrated part of the standard voices menu.

To add custom map preferences (colours) I have to create a new folder and store the new options separately from the default ones, then they show up as a sub-menu of the standard menu, and are presented differently.

To change the standard menu and preferences menu, I have to load a new menu definition file into a new folder, but then it gets picked up automatically and used by the application (except that it doesn't for me).

Three different approaches, three different implementations, and three different results.

I guess the answer is that each of the third-party add-on suppliers have found different ways to get inside TTN6 and attach their bits and pieces, but shouldn't an application that's matured as far as version 6 be providing a standard set of "hooks" for this sort of thing ?
