Best £350 (or £400) bargain going!

And not a cheap and nasty piece of kit either, despite some uninformed opinions/reviews.

The only criticism I agree with (from reviews on this excellent site) is the battery catch problem. PITA but a very minor quibble easily fixed with hot glue, sticky tape, or just being careful when removing from the leather case!

Funny how some reviewers miss that clearly obvious minus point entirely, yet come up with a pile of lies/rubbish in their articles.

Seems to me they have merely had a look at the box in the local Aldi and made up their own mind from there - with their snobbish prejudice along with it. Maybe now its £50 more expensive and available at Halfords they will actually try it?

Sorry, but this so called review is an outright piece of fiction Evil or Very Mad

I can rip it to pieces but I'll let other owners do that instead Smile

(no voice directions! Laughing Out Loud!)

Drew

PS. I was inspired to look for a review after being told my PPC is not SDIO compliant, despite the fact that it is - I am using a WLAN SDIO card right now. Apparently this is down to most reviews saying it does not have an SDIO slot.

(Isnt SDIO necessary to be Windows Mobile 2003 compliant?)

No. There's some politics here (supposedly BSquare, who are responsible for SDIO Now!, tried and failed to persuade Microsoft to take on the the technology and bundle it with Pocket PC 2003 as shipped to the OEMs), but so far as I know, the only requirement so far as memory cards go is the same as for Pocket PC 2002 - that a device designed new for the OS must have at least one memory card slot built in. I don't believe the technology is specified, though the industry standard has become an SD slot.

There are devices still on the market that don't have any SDIO support (the Dell Axim X5 is one). All but the most recent Toshibas don't support SDIO Now! - instead they have limited SDIO support which pretty much means that all that will work is the Toshiba Bluetooth card or SD memory cards.

In the end, if a manufacturer fits an SD slot, it's up to them to procure suitable drivers for their ROMs, and there is no guarantee of SDIO capabilities. SDIO Now! is becoming the standard, but you should always check (it is, of course, frustrating when a manufacturer doesn't make the position clear!). One reason why SD card compatibility and performance differs from model to model is because Microsoft do not supply SD drivers with Pocket PC to the OEMs. Even if SDIO Now! drivers are supplied, there's no guarantee that the same SD hardware is used on all models.

Just a Question....
What make of card are you using? What speed does it run? How reliable has it been?

Cheers

The Medion works fine with SDIO devices such as the Soeket WLAN card using the drivers on their website.

They mention they've used SDIO Now! to develop the drivers, so it that would imply the Medion supports it.

Cheers

Half cocked reviews such as that make me Evil or Very Mad. As you surmise, often they haven't even seen or used the unit, simply re-hashed a press-release or taken a 30 second peek inside the box!

I have just fired off an email to the editor at VNU regards the so called review. Perhaps they should emply some of us as freelancers to write their copy in future Wink

The full Medion review will be available very soon, as it is now available at Halfords as well as shortly at Toys'R'Us I've taken a little extra time to do it justice Thumbs Up
