Just bought one of these units, i previously ran route 66 on PDA form and was quite happy with it.

The unit in my opinion is very TomTom (which i would of bought if they had coverage here in Ireland) , nice big screen, good colours. Also a MP3 player. Halfords have these for £179.99

It comes with screen mount, carry case, ear-phones, 512 SD card, car charger and USB charger. Also has all programmes on CD in case you need to re-install the software. Battery life is quoted at 4.5 hours, though i have not had chance to try this yet.

The screen is 4.3 inch, anti glare, which works good even with bright sunlight, and the ETAs and turn icons are a good size for viewing.

Good clear loud voice instructions to guide you along the way, which is adjustable, and has a handy "sound off" button if you touch the screen.

It reroutes very quickly, although i have noticed it tries to get you back on your original route for a good while sometimes, even if the route you are on has become the quickest.

You can plan a route before you set off which i like and set waypoints if you want to make any stops or optimize your route.

ETAs are good, and one of the things i really like about route 66 is you can change your average speed for the different types of roads. Very handy here in Northern/Southern Ireland as most journeys are on main roads, and you never manage to get the average speed that some other units like destinator seem to think you will be driving at.

In the end i am very happy with the unit, and the software, and would personally recommend it, especially for anyone in Northern Ireland/Ireland looking for something with excellent map coverage.

I read a magazine review which praised this unit. The long battery life and anti glare properties of the screen are big features too.

I have also recently bought a Route 66 Chicago 6000 and am very happy with the unit except for the following problem.

If you turn the unit off (brief press of on/off button) then back on within about 15 minutes there is no problem, it goes to splash screen to choose between Sat Nat and MP3. It will turn back on with a brief press of the on/off button.

If you turn the unit off (brief press of on/off button) then back on after about 15 minutes delay it always comes on to the calibration screen so you have to recalibrate the screen every time before it restarts. It will not turn back on with a brief press of the on/off button so you have to hold the button for 6 seconds each time which does a full reset of the unit.

It also loses the time and date settings and takes longer to find its first fix on the satellites. It does retain the other settings though.

The battery meter shows a strong battery when this happens and the unit was fully charged via USB before first use.

Occasionally when trying to turn it on it would appear as if the unit was on but the screen was completely blank as if it was off. I only realised this when it said "and now turn left" when I thought it had not turned on!

I contacted Route 66 customer support about it and they said to reload the software or contact the retailer.

It seemed more of a hardware than software problem to me so I went back to Halfords who immediately exchanged the unit for another brand new one without any problems.

The lads in Halfords all thought it sounded as if the internal battery (on the motherboard) had gone so it was not retaining any settings.

My new unit worked fine for a couple of days, turning on immediately, but has now started to do the same!

Has anyone else suffered similar problems?

Before I go back to Halfords again it would be nice to know if this is a common problem.

I don't want to change the unit for a different make as I think it's an excellent SatNav unit but I can't put up with this for much longer!

I was having this problem, reloading the software cured problem for a couple of days.

But hasnt happened now since i started exiting the programme before turning off.

Tap screen while route 66 is running, tap exit, and switch off. Works a treat for me.

Thanks jonesy.

Have tried this and it seems to work.

Have noticed it did turn back on previously but with no visible screen but if you tap the blank screen to get to the menu then tap where the Exit should be it exits back to the splash screen and works fine.

Thanks again, this saves me another trip to Halfords!

Will just say that apart from this problem I think it's an excellent unit, big clear screen, very fast calculations and recalculations, don't let this problem put you off if you are thinking of buying one!
